While Disney has successfully cornered the market for younger teens with its Disney Channel musicals, Step Up shows the company (through its Buena Vista subsidiary) addressing the older high-school set with equal flair. Directed and choreographed by Anne Fletcher (choreographer of the excellent Bring It On), the musical depicts a clash between kids representing "street" and more formal dance, though its soundtrack is resolutely turned toward the R&B/hip-hop/dancehall axis. The CD starts off with three fab collaborations: "'Bout It" by Yung Joc and 3LW, Ciara and Chamillionaire’s fantastically elastic "Get Up" (which may be even better than Ciara’s smash hit "1, 2"), and Sean Paul and Keyshia Cole's "(When You Gonna) Give It Up to Me." But the three most dance-inducing tracks are solo ones: Kelis is at her funkiest on "80's Joint," and it's practically impossible to stay still during Drew Sidora's bouncy "Til the Dawn" (including an Earth, Wind & Fire sample) and Jamie Scott's Prince-esque "Made." Don't miss, tucked toward the end, Deep Inside's "Lovely" and Gina René's "U Must Be," two wickedly catchy slow songs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews

the song is a rip-off

Rating

Its a fairly good movie with pretty good music so i bought the soundtrack. I realized when listening to it that the song "Im'ma Shine" by YoungbloodZ is just a rip off of "Concerto in C Minor" By Benedetto Marcello. This is a classical Concerto for OBOE! I was very suprised, but the string parts are EXACTLY the same...

pretty decent

Rating

with a nice mix of uptempo R&B and Rap as well. The Step Up soundtrack does what it needs to for the most part and that is getting folks up and dance. There's more slower songs towards the end of the cd but they are pretty good as well. Only 2 songs on the cd that i didnt really care for myself otherwise this was a pretty solid purchase.

Great Workout Mix

Rating

I'd been looking for a good mix of fast-paced music to work out to. From Petey Pablo's 'Show me the Money,' to Dolla's 'Feelin' myself,' the Step Up soundtrack definitely has a lot more to offer in terms of good 'upper/workout' tunes than say, Save the Last Dance or Honey. The latter two are more R&B while Step Up's hip hop mix definitely gets you moving.

Can't wait for Step Up 2's Soundtrack now...
