Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review

The beat that got a generation dancing and brought ska back into the public eye. Produced by Elvis Costello, then still a boy wonder himself, the album built on the sound of the Specials' first two singles, and gave the world its first extended look at Two Tone. Inspired writing and arranging (much of it down to founder Jerry Dammers) with Terry Hall as the laconic front man made for a perfect combination, the riddim of ska and the speed of punk. As a testament to its power, two decades haven't lessened its impact. --Chris Nickson

This will wipe that blank expression off your face (4.5 Stars)

If anyone owns either just 'The Singles' or 'The Best Of The Specials' then you'll probably think that that's enough for me. Well, think again! If you own the former, then you really need this, and if the latter then you still need it just for the sheer joy of discovering the two gems that are 'Do The Dog' and '(Dawning Of A) New Era'. It's the life affirming burst of energy that these two tracks provide. Overall, a great album so "do the dog not the monkey" and order yourself a copy now!

Excellent.

The Specials at their peak. A good CD at a good price. I might almost go so far as to say "must have".

There are some that say that this music doesn't "travel" or "date" well. I say "poppycock". Do not confuse (for better or for worse) with Madness!

Still Skanking!!

Rating

This album wil aways be one of the best albums ever! The lyrics still mean as much today as they did in 1979. The dance beat and the tunes still skank and the sound is crystal clear!
Terry Hall's bitter beautiful voice singing 'TRY WEARING A CAP!' Always put's a smile on my face especially when I saw the miserable monster last night at the Brixton Acadamy!
The Specials were a great band and being crushed by a load of blokes and having water sprayed on me by the bouncers (Monkey men) bought it all back to me!

Great Album

Rating

This is the first Specials album I've bought and they're superb. I've always liked the Specials but never really got round to buying an album. Glad I did as there are some excellent tracks on here as well as the more well known ones (A Message to You Rudy, Too Much Too Young). I especially love the song the album ends on - You're Wondering Now.
