Dominoes Fall Album is Solid Effort

Rating

Let the Dominoes Fall is a solid album and the deluxe version features cool acoustic version of the tracks. Good album, but I still prefer Indestructible and Out come the Wolves!

Another Great Album

Rating

This is great, 19 tracks checking out after 46 minutes. The single Last One To Die is right on the spot and reminds me of that 2 minute blast of brilliance 'Worlds End' - and the memory catapults me back to driving at high speed around a service station in Hammers' car - top dollar. Other great songs are Damnation, The Bravest Kids, Lulu and even the timid Civilian Ways has a cool introspection about it.

Tim Armstrong is along with UK Nige, Bob Mould and John Dagger surely one of the most enchanting vocalists treading this tiny planet. Bauman claims that man cannot learn to love or die, he just experiences it when it happens and it cannot be prepared for or explained - it's a similar thing with music I find ... all part of the evolutionary process - tick tick, ticking ..... (9/10)

Could do better.

One can't help feeling slightly disappointed with this. After 6 years of almost constant activity, whether it be touring, collaborations, or solo efforts, it would appear that the chaps in Rancid are more than happy to lend their skills to others, while appearing happy to neglect the work which will bears their respective names.

Not a bad album to be fair, but any new album by any band will, inevitably, be compared with their best work. In Rancid's case this would have to be Life Won't Wait. It's difficult to explain why there is such a quality shortfall here. Life Won't Wait pushed barriers and saw Rancid explore new ground with new styles and were more than happy to involve heavyweights from other genrés. Hell, they even appeared on the same track as Mr Buju Banton and managed to keep up.

It appears now that the previous willingness to take risks has been exchanged for lazy punk and catchy, although largely standard-issue, ska-tinged efforts. Let the Dominoes fall is very much a follow-up to Indestructible where the seeds suggesting a general decrease in quality and skill were sown. I can't imagine the plethora of tracks concerning the rituals of twenty-something punks in the East Bay contained on this album are likely to convince otherwise.

distilling a career into one album

Rating

Now, every Rancid album has been different to the precedding one and this is no exception, thankfully they are not Green Day.
It's not going to win any new fans, really, lets be honest, it's preaching to the converted, in a good way. I love Rancid and like everyone else have been waiting a long time for this to come out, in between times seeing them live twice, on two different world tours, which is where they are at their best. A new band they are not but an excellent band of songwriters they have become.
Basically, what they have done here is taken, inadvertantly or by design i don't know, the best of their previous six albums and distilled it - please pardon the unfortunate pun there - down into one albums worth of eclectic material, and it works. Punk, Ska, Rockabilly, it's all there, which i personally think is a good thing, but no doubt some old Punx will think it a sell out, but who really wants to hear them re write Salvation and Ruby Soho on every album?
It is an interesting listen and needs repeated listening to really get it. I think it will make a lot more sense in retrospect after the hype and expectation has died away, and there has been a lot of that.
On the other hand the acoustic CD is superb and may even have been worth releasing as a CD on its own right. Now that really would have created a good Punk furore.
The only reason i am not giving the whole thing a full 5 stars is down to the monochrome/Discharge/Crass style packaging. There is even a nod to Discharge's Never Again in the lyrics to 'Disconnected'. While it looks good Rancid are too big for the DIY anarcho style imagery, they are not an anarcho band, never have been and will be.
And, as always, they have put a few too many songs on the CD. Just because you have them all writen doesn't mean you have to release them in one go. If there is that much spare material kicking around, as the DVD implies, why not release another album in eight months, now that would be cool.
Looking forward to hearing it being played live though and at least it is better than indestructable.
As an aside, you should go and read the 2K Kerrang review it's hillarious but then Rancid aren't Iron Maiden or Trivium who release the same album time after time to make it easier for the reviewers to absorb, thank god.

Best album for years but dvd is a big let down

Rating

This is a great return to form for rancid, there is a little bit of everything here from dancehall reggae to full on punk and on the whole whilst being varied it's a great album.
All the trademarks are here, tim armstrong's totally lazy voice which makes rancid sound so good,Lars frederiksen's straight up full throttle assault, great playing throughout and a brilliant production from bad religion's brett gurewitz.
In fact it's the best produced album from them yet.
Not sure about matt freemans vocals however, especially on La river....boom shacka lacka....shimmy shimmy shake,it all sounds a bit comedic and while it's incredibly hilarious to listen to i get the feeling that vocal duties should really be left with tim and lars, but that's my opinion.
Stand out songs for me are the title track dominoes fall which is so catchy, that's just the way it is now which is an instant ska classic and you want it,you got it is classic rancid,as good as anything from them!
While the album isn't quite up to the standard of and out come the wolves it's definitely better than the previous ones and a step in the right direction.
The acoustic cd is brilliant too,and shows how good the band are, some of the songs, most noticeably i ain't worried works better like this than the full blown version.
My only disappointment is with the dvd,it states on the box full length dvd but this isn't correct as it only lasts 37 minutes and to be honest because of the way it's been filmed with the black and white effects it's pretty much unwatchable which is a great shame because seeing the behind the scenes with the band is fantastic and i believe all albums should do this as it gives a great insight into the making of the record.
But on this occasion i would have rather had it just normal with no silly effects because imo it spoils the enjoyment completely.
The rest of the package is good too 3 posters and 4 guitar picks, very nice too!
So all in all it's great value and a smashing album too.
Just not the dvd.
