Not as unique as the name, but still very good!
Chickenfoot
Been meaning to check out this super group project since it's release in June 2009. It has since been certified GOLD, and the last date of the tour is this weekend, Dec. 5, 2009 in Las Vegas. Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Chad Smith = Chickenfoot.
If you have not checked it out yet, here's what to expect.
Hagar and Anthony have had the pleasure of playing alongside one of rock's greatest guitarists. I think it is fair to say they teamed up with a more than suitable alternative with Satriani leading the riffs and solos departments. As for Chad Smith, a diverse element which adds a nice "spice" in this cooking pot, although he brings more of us "banging rock" hat than his "funky groovy" hat.
Aside from being high, expectations are mixed - will it be technical or more song oriented? Will there be the benchmark Michael Anthony backup vocals? Will Chad Smith funk it up a little?
The result, a more straight forward rock album than expected. If someone told me this was a new Van Halen album, I would not argue during a quick listen. However, a closer listen, one notices the greatness of what Satriani adds. His sauve bends, vocal style leads, at times bluesy, and his full body sound that roars like it has been aged to perfection longer than Michael Anthony's whiskey collection, or mine for that matter. We also notice a lot less open hi hats that we are used to with Alex Van Halen. Ok so enough with the obvious VH comparison.
Songs are good, memorable. Fair to say it's an album more for Van Halen fans than for Satriani fans and Red Hot Chili Peppers fans. Key trax are Turnin' Left, Sexy Little Thing, Learning to Fall, Get It Up & My Kinda Girl - Satriani rips it up on this one and Michael Anthony backups are alive and well.
Simpy put, this is what you would expect from 4 masters of their respective instruments. Are there still people out there who don't give Michael Anthony the credit he deserves!? Hey, you try and play bass with Satch and Eddie!
Here's a quote from their website:
"I write what comes to mind," Hagar says. "I'm not bound by anything subject-wise. I'm inspired by the music. When I heard the music Joe was going for, it made me reach, it made me stretch. I think it made me sing in a way that I normally wouldn't have done. We seem to have that kind of effect on each other."
Satriani agrees. "People have this idea of what this band is about, or what Sammy Hagar is about as a lyricist and a vocalist. The thing is that we manage to get each guy to up his game in a non-confrontational way. When I play with Chickenfoot, I find myself wanting to give them more all the time. I don't hold anything back. I think the rest of the guys feel the same way."
Future plans for the moment include Chad getting together with RHCP, Sammy and Mike are heading to Cabo and Joe has a live DVD coming in the new year. The band promised they have more exciting CHICKENFOOT news coming soon!

Great hard rock by great talent
My brother and I have always been huge fans of Joe Satriani. So when I picked up Chicken Foot, it was not for Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony or Chad Smith. It was for how Joe Satriani will sound with all that other mega-talent. I was expecting a CD where each one of them would be going crazy in their own distinct ways to trying to show off their skills. I am glad it did not turn out that way. It is simply a great hard rocking music made by great performers who seem to have gelled nicely. Sammy Hagar's vocal quality is excellent and so is Joe's guitar work. Joe gets back to his signature lines in track # 6. My favorites are tracks # 1 (Avenida Revolucion), #6 (Get it up), #10 (Turnin' left) and #11 (Future in the past).
I hope the guys are back with more music to entertain.
The great, long-lost Van Halen album!
I got this CD from Amazon a few weeks ago and it's the only I've played in my car since then.
This is definitely the kind of CD Van Halen should be doing; Sammy Hagar's vocals are a bit limited, but still good (hey; he's 61! I'd love to be able to sing so well at that age). Guitarist Joe Satriani can easily do the sort of pyrotechnics Eddie V. is known for. Drummer Chad Smith has as many tricks as Alex V. and boy, it's great to hear bassist Michael Anthony's high harmony vocals again.
They've assembled an amazing package of memorable songs -- lots of interesting arrangements in terms of rhythmns and guitar charts, great melodies and production that lets these songs simply POUND through your speakers.
This CD is everything I could have hoped for. Well done, guys!
Sammy & the Boys Prove they Can Still Rock!
It was with great trepidation that I bought Chickenfoot's self-titled debut CD. How many times in the past have much-hyped groups of musicians come together, only to dissapoint me? Contraband...Coverdale-Page...The Firm....
First I saw the cover with its neat heat-sensitive packaging. At first it's a white logo on a black background, then you put your hands on it, and the members appear, in action, rocking out! Cool gimmick.
A gimmick is nothing without the goods, and Chickenfoot has the goods. I will go out on a limb and call this the best album Sammy has made in decades, and better than any Van Hagar album. Part of the reason is the performances by this cast of pros, and part of the reason is solid songwriting. What's left is youthful energy, which this band of old dudes has plenty of.
First obvious highlight for me was the glorious return of the VH harmony vocals. Michael Anthony was responsible for a lot of that in Van Halen, and it was just a joy to hear him harmonizing with Sammy again. Close your eyes and you'd think you're listening to some lost VH track circa For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Then you recognize those warm Satriani guitar tones and tricks. Finally you hear Chad Smith on the drums, making it all sound easy. This sounds like a real band. It sounds like they've been playing together for years (and, aside from Satch, they have been)!
Highlights for me included: Sexy Little Thing, Runnin' Out (sounds like a long lost VH tune), My Kinda Girl (great chorus!), and Turnin' Left (which just grooves). There's also a great bonus track on the vinyl version (track it down, it's worth it) called Bitten By The Wolf, which has this bluesy Satriani-circa-Flying kind of vibe.
If I had one complaint, and it's barely a complaint at all, it's that there's not enough Satriani for me. I love Joe Satriani, and I've been waiting for him to do something with a full band for a while. I guess I was just expecting him to burst into a 2 minute long guitar solo right in the middle of every song. But, of course, that's not what Chickenfoot is about. Chickenfoot really is a band, and sounds like a band. While Satch throws in plenty of crazy squeals and sounds, it's not a showcase for Joe. It's also not a showcase for Sammy, Mike, or Chad. All of them have plenty of time to shine.
I don't think it's a coincidence that this album came out in June. This is definitely the kind of record that you put on in the car, windows down, volume cranked. It's like those summers past when you'd buy the latest by Van Halen and just let it rock. Except this time, the old guys really do deliver the goods instead of just promising them.
Kicks It
I was cautiously optimistic with this album and bought it for those involved. Happily it is one of those albums that I like more and more with each listen. There are a number of very good songs on here, my faves being the ones that unabashedly kick it (Sexy Little Thing, Oh Yeah and Down the Drain). The whole is much better than the parts; Satriani doing some of his best consistently great and gutsy guitar, Hagar's voice is great, the drumming, bass and harmonies take some of the best of Van Halen, Montrose and the Chilis and the writing great. I'm already looking forward to more. Don't just listen once!
