Disc drive probs!

Rating

Be aware various disc drives don't like this disc! See the wow forums for a loooooonnnnggggg list of complaints. You may be paying for a registration code and a hefty download from Blizzard rather than running it from the disc.No probs with the original or BC but WOTLK hates my hardware!!!

I wasn't going to buy this expansion, but I'm glad I did.

I've been playing World of Warcraft for over three years but stopped earlier this year after being a little disappointed by the Burning Crusade expansion. TBC added a few new features into the game; 2 new races, daily quests, heroic dungeons, jewelcrafting and the arena, but always felt like more of the same.

Playing Wrath of the Lich King gives me the same feeling I had when I first started playing WoW, there are so many more additions and changes that everything feels new and exciting again.

The graphics, which were beginning to look a little dated, have been retooled with dynamic shadows added, draw distance raised and particle effects improved, the difference is really noticeable. The new continent has been really well designed and a definite improvement over what has gone before, I particularly enjoyed the high cliffs of Howling Fjord, the crumbling troll empire of Zul'Drak and the (so high it takes 5 minutes to fly to the top) mountains of Storm Peaks.

One of the critisisms levelled at Blizzard over the Burning Crusade was the lack of plot regarding the main enemies that you were fighting to defeat. Here you are introduced to the Lich King very early on and he appears a few times during quests giving you much more insight into the narrative. Another point to mention here is how well plots from earlier Warcraft titles have been integrated, it makes me feel like a tourist visiting important places from Azeroth's history. Blizzard have also made the world much more dynamic by having things in the environment change depending on what quests have been completed. A particular example is one area of Icecrown which starts off as an enemy base, once you have completed a few quests it becomes a friendly base with vendors, a flight path and questgivers. Quests have also been worked on and there is lots more variety and excitement than before. Many quests have been added where you control a machine or animal of some kind, which is a nice new addition and always fun.

The new Death Knight class is also very enjoyable, I started one off to experience the, very well done, starting area and am enjoying it so much I have continued right through to level 80, it feels a bit like a plate wielding warlock crossed with an evil paladin, in other words... FUN! Hopefully the Death Knight should make the perennial problem of finding a tank a little easier, just make the next hero class a healer please Blizzard.

The final thing to mention is the achievements system. I was initially a little sceptical about this, thinking it was a rip off of Xbox Live's achievements, which it is, but it gives so much scope for going back and re-experiencing old content that I'll let them get away with it. Nothing has been implemented yet that you can spend achievement points on, but they are bound to add something soon.

I'm really glad I decided to pick this up and give it a try as I'm currently having the most fun I've ever had in a game, too much fun probably!

Pathetic service, wish I had read the comments before ordering.

The wait is over as the Lich King awakes

Rating

"Zranta stepped forward, her feet making a satisfying crunching on the sparkling snow covered land. It was a rare occasion to see one of the Forsaken smile, well with Zranta her smile was more of a smirking and wicked grin. One which exposed her rotten teeth and flesh, to some not a pretty sight. The grin not just from the sound and the chilling feeling of the snow beneath her, her grin was more for the things to come. The Lich King, Arthus, to whom Zranta would thank but then bring to his knees in the name of Lady Sylvanas, it was the time for redemption." Epilogue from Corrupted Shadows(Jase Howse 2008), it mirrors the smile i had when i hit the Play button knowing that at last i could move beyond level 70.

The lich king is back, awake from his slumber to finish what he began but this time there are new heroes to join the fight. Another review, the writer said that you really do feel as if your actions are going to make a difference, this is a statement i have to truely agree with especially when you reach the Waithgate cutscene and the following few quests (i'd love to say more about it but i'm not wanting to spoil the revelation of it to people).
This really is the best thing to happen to WoW, unlike Dark Portal you have a choice of 2 start areas which are more relaxed and easier to play in than what the single starting zone of Dark Portal was. The quests are varried and fun with nice rewards. There are some nice additions of characters from Warcraft lore namely Krasus and the dragonflights. Due to currently reading the War of the Ancients Achieve it was nice to interact with those i have been reading about.
The look of the new areas are great and with some fantastic design elements. One of the best elememts is the vehicles, some quests involve using vehicles or mounts like Dragons and Mammoths to attack tougher foes or multiple units. For me it was most satisfying to see my character on a Red Dragon and using it to bath my targets with its flaming breath.
If you are looking to buy World of Warcraft to find out what its all about, now is the time as it has become so much bigger, better and most of all, fun. Not that it wasn't fun before, far from it - a few million others would agree there :D
