Editorial Reviews

Album Description

Gogol Bordello has been breaking down musical barriers since 1999 with a supercharged music based on a brutal gypsy two step rhythm that sounds like an Eastern European cousin of ska, augmented by punk, metal, rap, flamenco, roots reggae, Italian spaghetti western twang, dub, and other sounds generated by gypsies and rebels from across the globe. This is intense transglobal rebel rock, not light headed world fusion pop. It's about believing that music and art can transform negative energy to positive and inspire individual intelligence.

What Operation Ivy is to the latter-day ska revival, Gogol Bordello is to the increasingly popular revival of Eastern European music. Blending gypsy rhythms with the intensity of alternative-rock, metal (and even rap), the group is justly renown for their charged live performances. The title track is a lovely mix of Balkan strings with pleasant screams from lead singer/ shouter Eugene Hutz. If only more of the songs followed its lead. As a whole, the album sounds like Leftie bumper stickers set to vaguely aggro "gypsy rock." "My Strange Uncles from Abroad" makes its political statement in a personal and affecting manner, but other tunes such as "Forces of Victory" are merely affected. It's hard not to agree with their world view or love for the woozy sounds of Eastern Europe. But on this album, GB make the Dead Kennedys seem subtle. And it would be nice if there were more variety to their sound. Perhaps they should collaborate with Beirut, Muzsikas, or Hawk and a Hacksaw next time? --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews

Good gypsy punk

Rating

Combination of the colourfull and rich gypsy music with wildness and speed of punk makes it very unique experience.

Solid fusion gives way to predictable strucutres

Rating

Like a folksier System of the Down, the band Gogol Bordello takes traditional gypsy styles and injects a snarling hipster angle. Although one can sense the pleasure many of these songs would play live (their talked about shows at festivals have steadily gained popularity and with it more fans) on the album they just sound a little too boxed in, repetitious, even a little cartoonish or stereotypical at times. It is a pleasure then, to encounter the gems that fine tune their unique approach like "My Strange Uncles From Abroad" or when they elevate the instrumentation, as on the triumphant closing title track.

Whatever it is, it is fun!

I suppose David Spade could have said that he liked this band better first time around when it was called "Vopli Vydoplyassova", but in spite of (not ony unhidden, but proudly displayed) influence of VV, Gogol Bordello has the same highly entertaining and infectious energy and appeal, which equally defies characterization. I am also equally stumped by the absence of vodka and marinated herring at the American weddings, which adds a significance of socially relevant contents to the brilliance of form. Очень рекомендую даже москалям.

Its deffinetly a good album

Rating

Incredably hard to describe, but very good. Often chaotic, funny lyrics, and a great sound, make it very good.

Old School Punk with Contemporary Twist

Rating

Gogol Bordello's "Super Taranta" CD is a welcome new addition to anyone's 70s and early 80s punk collections. This contemporary band deftly expresses its understanding of subcultural anthropology. Gogol Bordello has captured the energy, humor, and raw sound of the traditional punk movement and adds an extra element of theatrical drama, cross cultural instrumentation and musical stylings.
