Album Description
Japanese pressing of this infamous third album from the American Idol winner comes with one hidden track: 'Chivas'. One of the most heralded voices in pop, Kelly Clarkson returns to reclaim her place at the top of the music scene with her new album My December. With every song on the record written or co-written by Kelly herself, My December is Clarkson's most personal record to date and shows tremendous growth as an artist. Going in a harder-hitting direction, the first single off the album, "Never Again," is all-attitude lyrics, edgy guitars and soaring vocals. BMG. 2007.

Judging by the themes of anger and betrayal that dominate Kelly Clarkson's third disc, My December, perhaps 'Jagged Little Idol' would have been a more telling title. According to interviews, the massively successful artist wanted more creative control with her music going forward; as a result, unlike her previous CDs, Clarkson contributes as a songwriter on every track. The final product is not nearly as catchy as Breakaway, but is far more introspective and honest. My December's overall sound brings a harder musical style than fans might expect, with acerbic lyrics to match; the disc's first single "Never Again"--a dark rock song slamming her ex-boyfriend--is certainly a tip-off. The compelling chorus of "Hole" finds Clarkson singing "There's a hole/inside of me/it's so damn cold/slowly killing me" over a melody that is far more Tool than top-40. "Haunted" and "Judas" are wrought-over tracks that veer into Evanescence territory, while the wonderfully sparse "Maybe" is a highlight within which Clarkson's pleading voice is perfectly showcased. My December's final listed track, "Irvine" (prior to the hidden bluesy acoustic ballad "Chivas") sounds far more Cat Power-meets-Corinne Bailey Rae than Clarkson, but it is certainly one of the most captivating songs on the disc, and serves as yet another reminder of just how versatile her voice is. Fans of her previous radio-friendly releases may well be divided on her new direction, but it appears to be the path Clarkson is likely to continue to travel. --Denise Sheppard

An Honest Review
I'll admit it, I'm a Kelly Clarkson fan, and have been since I first saw her perform on American Idol. She was the first and ONLY contestant that I've ever voted for. one reason: THAT VOICE. That girl can deliver a song! Thankful was an "ok" CD, but seemd to only scratch the surface of Kelly's potential (The Trouble with Love, Low, Anytime, Just Missed the Train and Beautiful Disaster are standout tracks from this album). Breakaway was a great improvement, though not perfect..it took all the strengths of her first album and magnified them times 10. My December, in my opinion, is her best album to date. No Fluff, No Sap, just real, raw emotion. She shows her edge, but there is also a tenderness and fragility there, you can actually feel what she is singing (just listen to Sober, Maybe and Irvine to see what I mean). Get this album...you will NOT be disappointed.
This Is The Perfect Example Of A Love/Hate Album
Kelly Strains Sometimes And Oversings On This Project But It's Tolerable. My Favorite Songs Are "Sober" "Can I Have A Kiss" "Irvine" "Chivas" And "Hole". This Is Definatley A Nice Batch Of Songs, I Never Could Understand Why It Recieved Poor Ratings And Little promotion, There Are Many Radio-Friendly Songs Here. While The Lyrics And Song Arrangments Are Good Her Vocals Get Raggedy At Times And Take Much of The Songs Quality.
Example: "How I Feel" Is A Great Song But Kelly Outright Yells And Pitches Words Out Of Her Mouth, Making The Listener Cringe And Irritated. Another Example Is "Don't Waste Your Time", The Key She Sings In Is Loud And Whiney, The Yelling Is Just On & On. Overall It's A Great Album, The Vocals Take From it Though
She's too talented for words...
I like Kelly Clarkson a lot. But I tend to keep that to myself because she is a massive pop star, and her songs are played ad nauseum on the radio. I love her music, but no one can deny that she's overplayed. That being said, My December surprised me. Right from the get go, you know this is going to be different from Thankful and Breakaway.
Never Again - It's a harsh song that rips into an ex boyfriend. It's not as radio friendly as Since U Been Gone, but it's catchy nonetheless (and it's great if you're going through a break up).
One Minute - I really liked this song, but I didn't love it. It's not that catchy, but she sings it with conviction. But I felt like this was an overproduced song...the machinery blaring in your ears with every note.
Hole - One of my favorites. The guitars on this one are just amazing. She veers into Amy Lee's territory with this one, but its still a great song.
Sober - Easily the most emotional song on the record. It's a tender, hypnotic number at first. Then you reach the bridge, and it all builds to a gorgeous crescendo. Anyone who has survived a tough time in their life will hear in this an anthem for surivival and perseverance.
Don't Waste Your Time - I'm not a big fan of this one. It's one of the "pop-ier" songs on the record, and it's kind of a curveball...you don't see it coming.
Judas - I only began to appreciate this one after events in my life mirrored the lyrics. But I do find this track to be somewhat bland.
Haunted - Definitely more Evanescence than Kelly Clarkson. I love this song. It's haunting (ironically) and powerful.
Be Still - Unexpected is the only word I can come up with to describe this. It's heartfelt and soft. There is no powerhouse singing in this one. She is mellow, and it suits her.
Maybe - Arguably the best song on the record. It starts with just her and the guitar, and then builds to a rock finish. There is no song on here that shows he voice better than this one.
How I Feel - Another pop song. I really like this one though. There's spunk in this one, and she shows herself for the fiery woman that she is. It's infectious.
Yeah - The most random track I've EVER heard, but it works lol. She sings with soul here, and the randomness of the trumpets in the chorus is so unexpected and welcome.
Can I have A Kiss - This is a strange song. It's definitely a rock song, but it reminds me of Alanis Morisette during her heyday. You'll like it, but it's not for top 40 radio.
Irvine - Haunting, haunting, song. It sounds like a record, and that adds to the mysterious vibe it produces. It's one of those songs that you actually listen to rather than sing along to it.
Chivas - The hidden track. I love it. Its just her and a guitar, and again it sounds like a record. She's got soul and fire here.
Bottom line is that it's a great record, but its not for those who love top 40 music. It's not made for radio. It's one of those albums that you listen to and realize that the artist has produced something that THEY can be proud of, and that sales don't matter as much to them. This album showcases her versatility as an artist. I respect her for that.
Heartfelt Performances by Kelly Clarkson
This is a very intense CD by Kelly. She co-wrote all of the songs. I think the vocal performances are amazing - you truly feel the emotion she's portraying - and that's what makes a true artist. The last song on the CD is really beautiful - it made me cry - if you want to hear some real artistry, you'll love this CD - it's not one to make you happy - but is one to listen to if you want to know what singing is all about - having the listener feel what the singer is feeling. Beautiful job, Kelly. I really hope, though, that you're happier in real life!
Good on american idol, still good in 2007-2008
i have been a kelly clarkson fan since the first season of american idol and now its almost 2009 and she still got it! I got this CD a couple days after it came out and listened to it as soon as i got it i knew it was a big step from breakaway, which was also a good cd, this cd is a must have and there is not bad song on here but my favorite is sober it just has the best beat and i like how its slow in the beginning and then gets fast i like songs like that! You need to get this if you don't already have it! Trust me it's worth it!
