Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic?born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. Now that's the kind of magic you want from musicals. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

authentic is the word

Rating

It's not strange that a song from this album has wan the Oscar for Best Song: although this is not what one would call a "commercial" album, it speaks straight to the heart, whether you've seen the movie or not.
Authentic lyrics, authentic music without any further effort to impress.

"Once" soundtrack

Jewel case was cracked (which may have happened in transit), but CD was fine and delivered quickly.

I love this music!

Rating

The story in this movie is entertaining though if you don't like music, don't bother.
But I do love music and have been searching for a reason to sing again. The music on this is exactly what i needed to hear. It's almost angelic to me; the harmonies are so good. The words spark my intellect. Glen's vocals are absolutely strong and solid. He makes me want to sing out as much as listening to Marketa does.
Thanks to everyone who made their albums possible! I am a new supporter of this groups work and will do my best to share the experience.

Loved every song!

I recently bought the movie and LOVED the music in it so decided to buy the soundtrack. The soundtrack is amazing. Every song in the movie is on the soundtrack. Definately a good purchase.

This is a wonderful movie and the music really drives it which is the reason I went looking for the soundtrack immediately after watching the flick. Good price and good service was provided by this Amazon service.
