Peter Benchley's The Beast DVD
This edition is a poorly edited version of the TV Miniseries. It was edited to be under 2 hours. Avoid this and buy the special edition instead.
AVOID! HORRIBLE! ALMOST AN HOUR OF THE MOVIE HAS BEEN CUT!!
I will keep this short and to the point. Do not waste your dime on this DVD. You are better off taping the movie to VHS and/or DVD (and editing out the commercials) when it comes on television.
The original, uncut movie is about 3 hours long. This DVD version is 114 minutes (UNDER TWO HOURS). Do the math. They have cut out almost an ENTIRE HOUR of the movie. If you are familiar with the actual version of the movie, while watching this you'll notice 20 minute chunks (literally) here and there that are totally missing.
I only paid a dollar for this new on half.com, and still feel completely ripped off. Thank God I didn't throw out my VHS version of the movie that is the ENTIRE MOVIE.
DO NOT BUY THIS!
not as good as the tv version
Although when it came out on tv it was a really good movie the videa seems to have left out certain areas, so I'm a little displeased with the DVD version. Hopefully someone will correct this oversight in the future!!
Giant Calamari on the loose :)
While not a masterpiece, I really like giant monster movies, and big squids are pretty cool. William Peterson faces a giant Squid family. It is not as good as Jaws, but still isnt really awful. You might want to rent it first if you are not 100% sure you will get into this movie. There are 2 editions of this DVD. There is one version on DVD was the shorter version of the movie. I have since gotten the longer - uncut 2 disc DVD version, but I must mention that the 2nd disc is not cared for when it is shipped for some reason. The first time disc 2 was scratched deep that I had to exchange it. The replacement DVD came & this time the 2nd disc was loose...however it played fine. Give that 2nd disc some love Amazon :)
The DVD print is no better no worse than the VHS print, and I am trying to replace VHS as much as possible so I got the DVD. I am hopeful Universal will put out a better remastered edition of it someday...
This movie is better than Eye of the Beast also with a giant Squid which doesn't appear until the end. It is also better than the Host and Cloverfield.
The Beast: Too Much Cut Out
As for "The Beast": I loved the original mini-series, but way too much footage was cut from the DVD version. The resulting movie seemed rushed and choppy. What's more, some of my favorite scenes were missing, including the night scene when the giant squid came near to shore.
I enjoyed the DVD just enough to give it two stars. But I would not have purchased this DVD if I had known about the cutting room hatchet job.
