Customer Reviews

It works, but...

Rating

You could spend money on this software and be fairly happy with it. Personally, I couldn't uncover any major issues with the software in the short time I spent trialling it (well, apart from the annoying quirk of Word to put a space-and-a-half between your lines... although this is readily fixable if you search t'internet).

It's aesthetically pleasing and pretty intuitive.

In fairness, it's a neat little creation from Microsoft.

BUT... why spend any money at all?

Apparently we're in the middle of a credit crunch, and therefore it is everyone's duty to spend less, and beg/borrow/steal more.

And steal we can. Microsoft Office? Well yeah, it works. But why not just download Open Office 3 instead? It's almost a complete facsimile of the £xxx branded edition, and, for goodness sake, it's free. Free!

How's that for a crunch-beating saving? Eh? EH?!

Want to be forced to relearn everything you know about Office?

I have happily been using Word and Office professionally since Microsoft first launched them but I can only say, DO NOT BUY OFFICE 2007 under any circumstances unless you have never used any of the Office products before.
The new Ribbon interface essentially hides all of the familiar menus and shortcuts so that you will have to spend hours (yes, really hours of your valuable life-time) searching for how to do things that you have known for years. It is as if your car manufacturer moved the gear-lever to the roof. All your hard won knowledge and expertise is made useless at a stroke.
There is no way to revert to a more familiar interface so even months after you installed Office 2007 you will still be pulling your hair out with frustration whenever you want to do a task of the slightest complexity.
I even had to look up the help files to find out where the version number info had been hidden tonight (No more Help/About...)
I can't say politely how bad and insulting to Office users this product is.
This review applies to all versions of Office 2007.

HORRIBLE software

Rating

I have tried this software and found it to be absolutely horrible, almost unusable. For expample, instead of the usual menu when you right click, all you get is one for formatting-and that's all you get. They have spent so much time on looks that I think they have forgotten functionality. Editing the formatting is ont the only thing I want to do from the right click menu!! Every time I try to do something I have to go to "help" to find where they have moved it to.. I HATE this software, I would give it 0 if I could! Iam sticking with an earlier version.

Its Really, Really Bad

Rating

I had high hopes for this product but be warned...

- The ribbon is a nightmare that won't go away. Hide it until you want to use something then you have to hide it again. Its really inflexible and can barely be customised. A lot of the contents are useless to most people.

- The ribbon is made of thick tabs that do their best to permanently take up as much of the screen as possible. They are NOT pull-down menus that disappear when you have pressed something.

- There are NO toolbars, only a quick access thing that barely stands in its place. Apart from three basic functions, you have to start adding everything yourself.

- A lot of stuff that was easily available in previous versions is hidden away and really takes some digging around to find. Other stuff seems to be entirely absent (such as Tools/Options) or can only be approached indirectly.

- For some reason, every time I open a document externally (through Start/Documents or Windows Explorer) the program goes through a configuration routine.

The applications feel like Microsoft are trying to force you into behaving a certain pre-defined way. Whereas in previous versions there seemed to be six different ways of doing the same thing, now there is only one way - the microsoft way.

I think this illustrates how Microsoft are now producing worse products rather than better ones. They seem to have gone off on a tangent of their own making. I don't think they have done any real research into what people want. This product actually makes work harder rather than simpler. I found that doing previously simple tasks became very frustrating.

I would recommend to anyone that they get an earlier version. It might cost a little more but it will be a big saving for your sanity and nerves.

I really, really regret buying this. I wish I had never heard of it as its now £60 down the drain. I have used Amazon for many years and this is the first time I have posted a review. The only reason I did so was to warn people - anything Vista-related is bound to be a big loser. Its my own stupid fault for not remembering this. Back to the drawing board... In the meantime, I intend to remove Office 2007, re-intall Office 97, and go and find 2003. At least '97 never let me down.

Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition (3 User Licence) (PC)

I was rather pleased with this because our computer had this old Microsoft Student Program called Microsoft Works which was rather rubbish. However, I was very pleased with this because It had everything I needed. PowerPoint, Word, Excel, but I did not see any point in Office Picture Manager and Office OneNote.
The new layout is kind of cool with all new ideas such as easy navigation to insert page numbers, headers and footers. They have also new slide designs for PowerPoint and also slide numbers.
Overall I think that it was worth my Mum getting it and We are using it well.
