Product Description

The desire to stand out with quirky, handmade, one-of-a-kind fashion has created a huge new crowd of hip young crafters hungry for ideas. In Bazaar Bizarre, Greg Der Ananian, founder of the bicoastal craft fair of the same name, combines a variety of how-to projects from radical crafters on his bazaar circuit. Speaking to everyone from alternateens to hipster thirtysomethings with an irreverent retro-chic attitude, this book is for those looking to put an edge on the things that grandma used to make. Bazaar Bizarre offers smart, subversive inspiration unavailable from traditional crafting books and patterns, appealing not only to the nostalgia for folk expression of previous generations, but also to the popular DIY attitude of the young and stylish. From silk painting to quilting and bookbinding, projects such as Anarchy Soap and Vinyl Record Cuffs teach basic skills of popular crafts and offer tips on how to creatively customize with thrift store purchases. Readers will love Der Ananian?s sardonic commentary, "Craftoids," about the history of crafting, punk- rock crosswords, funky finger-food recipes, and musical play lists.

NOT a book filled with crafty projects

Rating

I'm so annoyed with my purchase of this book. There are very few projects and it's hard to give much credit to the few crafts that the book does contain. All this book really leaves for the reader is lots of musings... and the title gives no indication that we're purchasing a couple hundred pages of personal nostalgia and musings about crafting. If you are questioning the quality of this book at all check out the abysmally low used/resale prices compared to other craft books of this genre. I hate to say it but this book stinks. I really wish I could give it a better review but I've just been trying to figure how to dump this thing.

A MUCH MUCH better book to check out that has tons of inspiring crafts and an appropriate quantity of interesting musings is Super Crafty: Over 75 Amazing How-to Projects.

weirdness for the sake of weirdness

Rating

Unless you like weirdness for the sake of weirdness, don't bother with this one. Not my cup of tea.

I admire the author for trying to do something different, but there's too much of his life story and silly anecdotes from other contributors in this collection... how about some real projects? There aren't many. As someone else wrote, a sock monkey is basically a sock monkey.

Der Ananian has some real talent, and a collection that features only HIS projects would be much more interesting. Put the silliness aside. It seems like he was just trying to pay tribute to his crafting friends and promote their work instead of giving any benefit to his readers at all.

Sock monkeys are sock monkeys...

Rating

As previous reviewers have said, this is NOT a craft book. The crafts are none too subversive or original. For example, the sock monkey is pretty much a sock monkey. It's a cute sock monkey, but it's pretty much the same sock monkey you can make from free instructions on the Internet. The other crafts are either along the same lines (a cushion) or too specialized to be of general interest (making stuff with old records). If you're interested in the lives of today's "alternacrafters" (and I believe crafters of today are the same as crafters of any era, but somehow feel obligated to imbue every project with irony) then this book features great personal reflections from their lives. Otherwise, check out one of the many great craft-project-oriented books out there.

Not so Bizarre.

Bought this for my thirteen year old daughter. She only liked one item...the clip on dreadlocks.

Bazaar, YES. Bizarre, YES. FABULOUS!! YES!!

Rating

Mr. Der Ananian 'crafts' a winner. The book combines hilarious and honest memories of his youth that rang true with mine, despite the fact that I was never crafty, and I grew up in a different ethnic mixture. But he describes a little bit of life and alot of crafty creativity. For anyone who likes to create, for anyone who had a mother, and for anyone who likes to laugh while learning, this book will be a re-read book. I keep it handy and read from it all the time.
