King
T.I.-King ****
While not the most original or revolutionary rap/hip-hop album to emerge in the last decade King is easily the most refreshing. T.I. has managed to be and maintain status as one of the few truly talented talents in the game as of recently. Reaching far beyond the norm in his lyrics and a man that can flow the way it is supposed to be done.
Lyrically King is an album mainly uplifting. Subject matter mainly of getting out of the hood and rising to something better while not forgetting where you came from. So in other words T.I. takes it old school and leans to the days of the Furious Five, DMC, Pac, and Biggy.
Songs like 'King Back' show T.I. ability as a producer more than just an artist. 'What You Know' paved the way for the radio without sounding tired and played out. 'Ride Wit Me' is almost novelty but passes just enough to feel like N.W.A. and early gansta rap. 'Top Back' is rap excess at it's best.
One thing that most be noted is the musicianship. That is something I haven't been able to say since the last DMC and Beastie albums. The horn charts through out King is honestly breathtaking. It is what truly won me over. It may be the only original thing about the album but it sure is a step in the right direction for the genre.
While everything here has been done before it is alright because T.I. can do what most other Mc's can and most of them only try to pull of what T.I. can.
Best Album By T.I. And A Modern Southern Masterpiece......
You know T.I. ('Tip' Harris) is confident of his abilities and his self proclamation as the KING of the south is based both on this confidence and a whole lot of southern braggadicio: all evident from Bass heavy bragging on the current single ' Front Back' featuring UGK to synthesisers and drum programming matched with gritty lyrics on (my current favourite) 'What you Know' to Common's laid back style and Pharrell's falsetto over clap beats on another 'show-off' track ' GoodLife' and all this is started off by the arrogantly titled but message laden 'King Back'.
T.I.'s machismo and the implied acceptance (not wholesome) by his peers, by featuring on his album, carry with it an unstated approval that he's one of the best, if not the best, rapper repping for the south. He's got a certain swagger that works well with the stomping beats and finger snapping rhythms that we're coming to associate with the south.
The second half of the CD sees him turning southern thug lover on my second favourite (one I think should be a single) 'Why you Wanna' which samples a classic hook from Crystal Waters/Neal Conway's 'Gypsy Woman (She's homeless') and also alluding to desiring a shorty thats not his on the laidback 'Hello', he then goes back to familiar territory on the club friendly cuts 'Get It' and 'Top Back' (produced by Mannie Fresh).'I'm Straight', a dark and sombre cut, featuring BG of the Cash Money crew and Young Jeezy further cements what is a roll call of the best of the south; and maintaining the southern tip the album also features Governor on ' Hello' and Young Buck of G-Unit and Young Dro on 'Undertaker'.
T.I.'s The King Is A Instant Classic, And A Easy Way To Pick Up This Album In Your Local Store.
heads up!
heads up t.i. fans, this records hits HARD. has some killer hooks and the melodies will get stuck in your head, guaranteed! great anthemic gangsta tracks like "what you know" and "top back" to the fun an infectious "why you wanna."
i don't know about king, but definitely a member of hip-hop/rap's oligarchy. maybe a duke or something.

4 Stars
Overall this wasn't a bad album but I expected better. T.I. is a great artist and his previous 3 albums are dope as ever but this is his first effort that I was disapointed with. The album is mixed with great and average tracks. I've still got faith in T.I.P. though. Maybe next years T.I. vs. T.I.P. will bring back his creditability after this fairly disapointing effort.
SUPERB, MAGNIFICENT, AWESOME
it would be a great mistake not to buy thsi album (cop the special edition one that has a bouns dvd) the album is FULL of singles. TIP HARRIS (real name clifford joseph harris jr.) is the true king of tha south
