Grammy winner (for 2001's Halfway Tree) Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, the youngest singing son of the immortal Bob and brother of Ziggy, Julian, Stephen and Ky-mani, has made a major splash in the family business. The confrontational title track of his third album (which entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at Number 7, the biggest opening week ever for a reggae artist), deals with vacationing "haves" partying on the backs of increasingly desperate "have-nots." It has fomented a storm of protest from corporate entities who claim that Marley has presented his homeland (or more accurately, their interests) in a negative light. Another high point is "Pimpa's Paradise," a heartbreaker about drugs leading to prostitution, backed by a vulnerable-sounding acoustic guitar. Produced by Damian and Stephen Marley, it's an eclectic, sophisticated mix, constructed over treacherous rhythmic undercurrents, illuminated by empathy, courage and soul. A shifting kaleidoscope of classic and cutting-edge Jamaican grooves spars with R&B and hip-hop, references to Marcus Garvey, Eek-A-Mouse, and Exodus, plus guest stints from Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Bobby Brown, Black Thought and Nas. --Christina Roden

Love his father's music, but Damian has a style all of his own. Destined to make a name for himself just like his father too.

AWESOME album

This is an awesome cd. When I first got it, I didn't understand everything Damian was saying, but now that I have it memorized I can truely say this is Damian's best offering to date. Let it grow on you and read the lyrics along with the song if you don't get it at first. This is great dancehall style reggae music, produced by his genius half-brother Stephen Marley. The best songs are "Confrontation," "There For You," "Welcome To Jamrock," "The Master Has Come Back" (using a Bunny Wailer sample), "All Night (f/ Stephen Marley)," "Pimpa's Paradise (f/ Stephen Marley and Black Thought of the Roots)" (probably the best Bob cover by one of his kids to date; completely original), "Move!" (a re-make of Bob's "Exodus"), "Road to Zion (f/ Nas)," and "Khaki Suit (f/ Bounty Killer and Eek-A-Mouse)." Damian deserves much respect for this album. Get it if you love dancehall or if you've heard "Welcome To Jamrock" (the single) and are just wanting to know if the other tracks live up to its greatness. Trust me, they do.

I totally love this cd!

I heard a few reggae songs that I liked, but this cd, which I originally purchased after seeing the video for "Road to Zion" featuring the ultra talented NAS, is the best cd I purchased in quite a while. I can listen to every single song, and I am glad he included the words, because I have learned almost all of them. Most of my friends do not give reggae a chance unless it's Sean Paul, but I tell them that Damian is "the truth", and listening to his music is not only entertaining, but uplifting, motivating and inspirational. It's wonderful that Bob Marley had such talented children, and Damian is one of the most talented, like he says, verbally, no doubt, he is "nitroglycerin"!
