Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com

With her debut album appearing at the age of 28, Martha Wainwright has lived in a musical world since she was born. She posses a voice with timbres similar to her brother, Rufus, and to her mother and aunt, Kate & Anna McGarrigle. She also has a way of stretching syllables out for reasons at once musical and textual, very much like her father, Loudon Wainwright, from whom she's also inherited a bold autobiographical stance, albeit couched in her own particular poetics. A bracing confidence informs these thirteen songs, from the bright shiny pop of "G.P.T." and "The Maker" (with the unmistakable voice of Rufus on backup vocals) to the fragile balladry of "Whither Must I Wander." Martha Wainwright continues the family tradition of audacious debuts. -- David Greenberger

Fine, fine, fine and fine

Rating

I've loved this album from first listen. Martha's wonderfully supple voice mates well with an excellent set of songs. Family dynamics show up (as they do in most of the Wainwright/McGarrigle canon) in the brilliant BMFA, an ode to (perhaps transient) father hatred. But Loudon started it. This is an excellent recording, and if there was justice in the world Martha would sell more than Rufus.

Superb!

Martha rocks! I bought it on a whim and I am SO glad. Listen to it a few times and you will see what I mean. It grows on you, as all the best music does. I listen to it while painting. Inspired and inspiring.

Gritty!

Rating

I have to say this CD was the biggest & best surprise purchase. I really love her gritty, sultry voice! There is no doubt this family has alot of talent!

Bloody MF Ahole is such a good song...but take a lighter note and listen to These Flowers....that is so beautiful! She can easily go from one emotional extreme to another and there is no doubt as humans we can relate to them all. The Wainwrights really know how to tug at your heart strings lyrically because they write what is REAL....the reality of people's lives and feelings unabashidly honest!

While I didn't like a few of the songs on this CD by far I loved the majority...so there's something for everyone's tastes. I can't wait for her next CD.

This runs out of gas

There's no denying this family has all kinds of talent running through it and from her live performances and smaller releases, this was a CD that had some anticipation behind it. It starts off great, with the first few tracks really setting the table for her voice (which is at its best in crescendo), but near the end of the disc, things start to drag.

I also would have liked to see a bit more diversity in the kinds of tracks she selected for the album or at least a rearrangement of their order. There are a few tracks that seem to blend into each other.

Overall a good release, let's just hope that she follows the path of Rufus and gets stronger as each CD comes out.
