Album Description

Skywoman is a journey from the beginning of time. The exalted and powerful voice of two time Grammy nominee Joanne Shenandoah along with the majestic sounds of the symphony depict Iroquois legends in a dramatic and enthralling performance. The world premier of Skywoman was performed in the heart of the Iroquois Confederacy with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and portions were seen nationally on the PBS-TV special "Songs of the Spirit" with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.

If the very idea of two-time Grammy nominee Joanne Shenandoah performing with the Syracuse Symphony seems overwhelming--relax. She would shine in any setting. Her bell-like alto is obviously the fulcrum upon which this album is balanced, whether she is accompanied by arranger Hartmut Seidler's mellow finger-picked guitar or effortlessly holding her own amid an orchestra in full cry. The work comes across as a free-form but well integrated modern song cycle on Native American themes -- even an established favorite like Feather In The Wind seamlessly becomes part of the new expression while being discovered afresh. That the album was recorded in the heart of Ms. Shenandoah's Iroquois Confederacy-Oneida Nation homeland in upstate New York probably helped establish and maintain an ideal relationship between past, present and future. In any case, longtime fans will enjoy discovering another facet of a remarkable artist while newcomers will simply be transported by the beauty of her voice. --Christina Roden

A bit of a disappointment

Rating

I have enjoyed Joanne Shenandoah's recordings in the past; however, this one was a disappointment to me. It relies heavily on orchestration and traditional western (meaning European) notions of music. There's nothing really wrong with it - but nothing really RIGHT with it either. While I know that "Native American" music can become stereotyped, this just feels wrong to me - it feels as though it as lost its identity, and to me, that identity has been what Joanne Shenandoah's music has been all about.

This CD is a beautiful work of art. All of Ms. Shenandoah's work that I have heard, and I have almost all of her CDs, has been wonderful. But this new work elevates her artisty to a new level. I is a true pleasure, and sometimes even a religious experience to listen to this wonderful piece of music. She is obviously a person of great talent and spirtuality. Her music uplifts the spirit and teaches the mind.

Walter Smith - Skywoman by Joanne Shenandoah

Rating

Skywoman is yet another surprise showing this woman's great talent! The blending of her beautiful and graceful voice with a symphony is a true tribute to her talent. Joanne's talented voice telling the stories along with the symphonic music woven into these songs is a real treat. I have greatly enjoyed listening to this CD and learning more about the Iroquois legends. Each song is a gift from those who came before us and have kept the traditions alive, it is truly the gift of the future. Thanks for keeping the spirit alive!

In her latest CD, Joanne Shenandoah has combined her golden voice with a full symphony orchestra to produce a memorable musical experience. Inspired by the book Skywoman: Legends of the Iroquois written by Shenandoah and her husband Doug George Kanentiio, Skywoman tells a timeless story of creation with a powerful message of peace. From the stirring "Skywoman" to the beautiful "Grandmother Moon", the haunting "Giving Thanks", the charming "Evergreen Trees", the "Whales of the Sea" (with actual whales cries), to the lovely "Feather in the Wind" this CD weaves a magical musical spell.
