Sung in her native Iroquois tongue, Joanne Shenandoah's music is like a lullaby with a touch of pain and longing lingering beneath the surface. Sometimes called the Native American Enya, Shenandoah actually has a deeper, more powerful voice than the Irish thrush. Her songs are like Native haiku, short fragments that build in their own poetic arc, sharing an innate musicality not unlike Irish Gaelic. Although Shenandoah has several recordings in a more conventional folk-singer vein, Peace & Power draws from her four most evocative, atmospheric albums: Matriarch, Orenda, Peacemaker's Journey and Lifeblood. Both pianist Peter Kater, who produced Lifeblood, and Tom Wasinger, producer of the other three, successfully frame Shenandoah's simple songs in detailed arrangements. Wasinger, in particular, creates an ethereal chamber music ensemble, with guitars, Middle Eastern zithers, Armenian duduks, citterns, and African kalimbas. The CD comes with an extensive autobiographical booklet detailing Shenandoah's life journey and her pride in her Native heritage, though there's not much information about the music itself. And it would be interesting, in this retrospective context, to hear how she has taken her tradition and extended it into new musical terrain. But at least the aural evidence is on the CD. --John Diliberto

Personal service
There was a problem with the shipping, However, they stayed in touch and on top of the problem until I received my order. Would use them again because they made the effort to make sure I was satisfied.
The title says it all
This is my first Joanne Shenandoah CD, but I hope I will own many more. Her vocal instrument is warm and assured, and the songs she has selected are powerfully evocative of a world where man exists peacefully with his fellows and with the planet. If only we could all tap into that Peace & Power.
Tradition, Tradition...
I actually have spent many an evening around the campfires, with the Shenandoah family, singing and dancing tradtional Oneida songs. She shares with you, on this cd, a beautiful rendition of each and every one of them. When she sings, it takes me back, generations. Her voice is sweet, clear, strong and beautiful. Thank you Joanne for this gift of your soul.
hauntingly beautiful
Shenandoah has a beautiful voice and the rhythms are haunting, causing you to listen to some songs repeatedly.
A great blessed voice
This is the first CD that I buy of Joanne Shenandoah. It was I great surprise not just for the quality of the production but for the unique sweet voice Joanne has to sing this king of songs. To those who are looking for new experience into this kind of music it is high recommended.
