Solid Roots, weak dancehall

Rating

This album is mostly solid. Only problem for me is some weak dancehall riddims but at the same time I do realize that this album is already 9 years old and dancehall riddims aren't always timeless. (Although good roots riddims seem to be maintain their greatness forever.)

Top tracks for me are of course the more rootsy songs- In This Time, Ripe Leaf, What Does It Worth, Babylon Homework, Oh Children, Break Free, and Mental Chains. Top notch lyrics and delivery from Sizzla and really great melodies and riddims. Only thing that I can say negative about any of these tracks is that on Mental Chains the Western-sample should have only played for the intro, not for the whole song, but oh well. Sizzla's lyrics, melody, and delivery save it from sounding sub-par.

The best dancehall song on here is absolutely "As In the Beginning." Although it's not the most timeless dancehall riddim in the world, Sizzla voicing over it makes it come together perfectly. Also, True Hearts is a really good R&B styled song.

The riddims to Eastern Mountain, Burn Dem Turf, A Wah Dat and the A Wah Dat remix are pretty weak and make the album a little less than an amazing effort. Lyrically Sizzla is still on point, I just wish he voiced the songs over better riddims.

Brilliance from di reggae king

One of the first from Kalunji, and one of his finest. I have a ton of sizzla albums, and I constantly go back to this one. The first four tracks are some of the best songs ever. The rest of the album does not disappoint. If you don't have this, and you enjoy sizzla, get this immediately, it has all vibes going forth - a must for any fan. Also recommended for those interesting in listening to classic Sizzla. Long live kalunji! bless

More Sizzla!!

Rating

This is my second Sizzla purchase and I must say that I like this one just a tad bit more than Bobo Ashanti. "In This Time," "As In The Beginning," "A Wah Dat" and "Ripe Leaf" are stand-outs, but the whole CD gets two thumbs up from me. I'm still on the lookout for more Sizzla that is along the lines of this one and Bobo Ashanti as they are kinder and gentler to my ears.

Amazing. . .

Rating

There can be made a very strong case that Royal Son of Ethiopia is Sizzla's absolute best album ever. It is without a doubt, lyrically, one of his best, and I really like the fact that Greensleeves decided to put the lyrics to all of the songs in the liner notes, seeing them in writing actually somewhat helps the entire experience somewhat. Favorite tracks absolutely "Eastern Mountain", "In This Time" with Luciano, "Burn Dem Turf" and "Mental Chains". The absolute best song being without a doubt "As In the Beginning" which besides "The World" and "Praise Ye Jah" is my favorite Kalonji song ever. Overall, this album is amazing, no weak points, no weak tracks of course(they don't exist on Xterminator) and just an exellent album.
