The Heptones - Deep In The Roots

The original Heptones ranked among the premier trios in reggae history, but Deep In The Roots (Heartbeat/Rounder) doesn't include songs done when the great Leroy Sibbles was their lead singer. Instead, it covers the period from when Dolphin "Naggo" Watts joined holdovers Earl Llewellyn and Earl Morgan. Watts had a strong, engaging voice, but didn't have either Sibbles' range or dramatic presence. The trio compensated for that by doing songs that placed less emphasis on individual voice projection and instead highlighted deep, steamy harmonies and either overt political or rousing spiritual lyrics. With the tandem of drummer Sly Dunbar and guitarists Tony Chin or Binghi Bunny providing the musical impetus, the second edition of the Heptones enjoyed renewed success in the mid and late-'70s. This disc includes the extended versions of several hits, offering listeners both the original vocals and the bonus instrumental mixes that were tacked onto the 12-inch singles.
