Stone Love 34th Anniversary - Mas Camp - Jamaica
The current Stone Love Movements crew of Iceberg, Diamond, Geefus, Billy Slaughter, Bill Cosby and Richie Feelings were decked out in jackets. Owner Winston 'Wee Pow' Powell was smiling in brown, while Bass Odyssey's Squingy remembered 'big head Chico' and Cancer, and there were respects to Rory at Mas Camp Sunday morning.
However, although the audience was spread out over the Oxford Road, New Kingston venue, it was not dense and the moments of genuine 'forwards' were sporadic, a 'watch and rock' stance being more the order of the morning.
Just past 2 a.m., Cosby orchestrated some dub plates of the early '90s, Buju Banton chortling "Stone Love, it's your anniversary," and Boom Bye Bye, Capleton's Tour on dub plate also making the cut. A pair of Bounty Killer specials preceded some leggy lasses in Cooyah gear, intended hosts Voicemail hitting the stage with honours to Bogle.
There were cheers for the other billed host, Tony Matterhorn, who hit the stage with a 'goodas' during the extensive awards segment, dancers Colo Colo and Ding Dong among the very few awardees on hand to collect their awards for Best New Male Dancer and Best Male Dancer respectively.
With some of Stone Love's selectors playing individual rounds, Feelings orchestrated a genuine forward starting with a Mavado selection and Beenie Man's declaration of a "bulletproof vest". There were more cheers as Bill Cosby stepped forward with Bounty snarling the need for "bulletproof skin" and Mavado's Real McKoy continued the excitement. It cooled for a $10,000 giveaway, courtesy of Guinness, bMobile cellphones also being tossed into the audience.
Iceberg presented a few songs before former Stone Love selector Swamp King announced his new name to be Lion King, before playing Buju Banton's take on Our Father and playing Respect for Wee Pow. He resisted giving up the microphone and, when he finally left, Billy Slaughter sent his respects, "but yu have a problem. You must not violate. Dats why yu no reach no further. Yu mus' co-ordinate."
Rennaissance's Jazzy T dropped a Busy Signal and Bounty Killer combination, pulling up when Bounty intoned "dis one a fe all real thugs", Sky Juice went gospel with Can't Even Walk and lovey-dovey with Guilty, sweat glistening on his bald head and his belly bouncing as he gave nipple nibbling instructions, complete with sound effects.
With the live entertainment beginning at just after 4 a.m., Wayne Wonder went Searching and reminded of the Forever Young days with Stone Love, and Code Red set the scene of a three-way lyrical clash between Bounty Killer, Mavado and Busy Signal on one hand, and Beenie Man, Aidonia and Vybz Kartel on the other, before Fantan Mojah expressed his disgust with Risto Benji.
Warrior King, Ras Myrdak and Bescenta all took a touch before and Rebel T came in, THE STAR calling it a morning at 5 a.m. with most of the audience still firmly in place at Mas Camp.
