JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Reuters) -- A whites-only South African enclave will issue its own money Thursday -- just two days after the country celebrated the 10th anniversary of democracy and the end of apartheid.
Orania -- a small town on the edge of the Karoo desert -- is populated exclusively by white Afrikaners, descendants of Dutch and French settlers who emigrated to South Africa three centuries ago.
The community says it just wants to protect the Afrikaner culture, but others see it as one of the last vestiges of apartheid-style thinking, and an anachronism in a country that Tuesday marked 10 years since its first all-race elections.
"The whole idea is that we are actually working toward the idea of a community that is self-sufficient," spokeswoman Eleanor Lombard said of the new currency, which is called the Ora and will come in four denominations -- a 10, 20, 50 and 100.
Lombard rejected suggestions the new currency was a further illustration of the community's withdrawal from the "new" South Africa -- the rainbow nation its first black president Nelson Mandela vowed to unite after he was elected in 1994.
"South African society is like a fruit salad -- if I am allowed to be whatever I am -- a banana, an apple or whatever -- I can add to the flavor," she told Reuters Wednesday. "If I am all squashed up, I cannot contribute."
Orania hopes the Ora will encourage its residents to buy locally and says it will help Oranians to earn interest on the national rand currency that is banked when they exchange it for the new money.

Yeah that is some real bullshit.......they make 2 steps and then with this kinda bullshit make ten steps backkkkkkk,
So if you and I have a community we should have our own flicking c7urrency. And also what is Africaners culture (To down press all other that are not of there skin tone ) Them is a bunch racist bastrads. If I win the Lotto and gonna buy one set a land there and "Clourize the whole place" see how them like that shit |

| This is a Government issue, some people have a difficult time accepting change. I cannot imagine the Government would support this currency. |
