The Emperor introduced Ethiopia's first written constitution on July 16, 1931, providing for an appointed bicameral legislature. It was the first time that non-noble subjects had any role in official government policy.

He spoke eloquently of the need to protect weak nations against the strong. He detailed the death and destruction rained down upon his people by the use of chemical agents. He reminded the League that "God and History would remember (their) judgement." He pleaded for help and asked "What answer am I to take back to my people?" [1]. His eloquent address moved all who heard it, and turned him into an instant world celebrity. He became Time Magazine's "Man of the Year" and an icon for anti-Fascists around the world. He failed, however, in getting what he needed to help his people fight the invasion: the League agreed to only partial and ineffective sanctions on Italy, and several members recognized the Italian conquest.

Following the 1936 Italian invasion of Ethiopia from its colonies in Eritrea and Somalia, Emperor Haile Selassie I made an attempt at fighting back the invaders personally. He joined the northern front by setting up headquarters at Desse in Wollo province. The Italians had the advantage of much better and a larger number of modern weapons, including a large airforce. The Italians also extensively used chemical warfare and bombed Red Cross tent hospitals, in violation of the Geneva Convention. Following the defeat of the northern armies of Ras Seyoum Mengesha and Ras Imru Haile Selassie I in Tigrai, the Emperor made a stand against them himself at Maychew in southern Tigrai. Although giving Italian pilots quite a scare, his army was defeated and retreated in disarray, and he found himself being attacked by rebellious Raya and Azebu tribesmen as well.

The Emperor made a solitary pilgrimage to the churches at Lalibela, at considerable risk of capture, before returning to his capital. After a stormy session of the council of state, it was agreed that because Addis Ababa could not be defended, the government would relocate to the southern town of Gore, and that in the interests of preserving the Imperial house, the Empress and the Imperial family should leave immediately by train for Djibouti and from there to Jerusalem. After further debate over whether the Emperor would also go to Gore or he should take his family into exile, it was agreed that the Emperor should leave Ethiopia with his family, and present the case of Ethiopia to the League of Nations at Geneva. The decision was not unanimous, and several participants angrily objected to the idea that an Ethiopian monarch should flee before an invading force. Some, like the progressive noble, Blatta Takele, an erstwhile ally of the Emperor, were to permanently hold a grudge against him for agreeing to leave the country. The Emperor appointed his cousin Ras Imru Haile Selassie as Prince Regent in his absence, departing with his family for Djibouti on May 2, 1936.

Marshal Pietro Badoglio led the Italian troops into Addis Ababa on May 5, and Mussolini declared King Victor Emanuel III Emperor of Ethiopia and Ethiopia an Italian province. On this occasion Marshal Pietro Badoglio (declared the first Viceroy of Ethiopia and made "Duke of Addis Ababa") returned to Rome and took with him Haile Selassie's throne as a "war trophy", converting it as his dog's couch. At Djibouti the Emperor boarded a British ship bound for Palestine. The Imperial family disembarked at Haifa, and then went on to Jerusalem where the Emperor and his officials prepared their presentation at Geneva.

Emperor Haile Selassie I was the only head of state to address the General Assembly of the League of Nations. When he entered the hall, and the President of the Assembly announced "Sa Majest? Imperiale, l'Empereur d'Ethiopie," the large number of Italian journalists in the galleries erupted in loud shouts, whistles and catcalls, stamping their feet and clapping their hands. As it turned out, they had earlier been issued whistles by the Italian foreign minister (and Mussolini's son-in-law) Count Galeazzo Ciano. The Emperor stood in quiet dignity while the Rumanian delegate, M. Titulescu, remarked to the President of the Assembly, M. van Zeeland: "For the sake of justice, silence these beasts!"

The Life and Acheivements of Haile Selassie I

Introduction

This report is a summary of the life and achievements of Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. The purpose is to inform the reader of the incredible accomplishments of man who is not fully credited for his work. The idea is to broaden people’s knowledge of this remarkable man, so that he may receive credit where credit is due. Also, to update the reader’s knowledge of Ethiopia.

In this report you will learn of The Emperor’s birth, his childhood, his teen years, his reign, his achievements, and his lasting impact. You will learn of how a man of a "third world" country defeated an industrial nation. You will learn how he revolutionized, modernized, and reorganized his country which was so steep in tradition and economics. This man possessed the most power which one man could ever possess and he used it for a just cause. To this day he is respected, loved, and even worshipped by a wide range of people, not just in Ethiopia, but internationally.

Birth

Lij Tafari later to be known as Ras Tafari and even later to be known as Haile Selassie, was born on July 23rd 1892 in Harrar, Ethiopia. He was born to Ras Makonnen and his wife Wayzero. For years before his birth chaplains and astrologers had been foretelling the infant’s birth. Neptune and Pluto had started moving slowly towards each other in 1399 along the Heliocentric line taking 493 years to intersect. They intersected the same time Lij Tafari was born, July 23rd 1892. This was also the first day of the zodiac sign, Leo, an event that would later help to prove his title given at his coronation, The Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, being as Leo means lion and lion corresponds with the biblical house of Judah.

Ras Mokonnen was right hand man to Emperor Menilek II, which qualified Tafari for a life a importance and power. Tafari’s bloodline had been traced back to Menilek I the product of the meeting of the biblical King Solomon and Queen Makeda of Sheba, Ethiopia. Menilek I founded the Solomonic Dynasty in Ethiopia which remained until Haile Selassie who is the last emperor of Ethiopia. Tafari was born into a traditionally strict Ethiopian Orthodox family. AS tradition goes, he was baptized on the 40th day of his life. Tafari would later account that he gained knowledge threw his baptism.

Youth

When Tafari was a boy rumors circulated about his ability to talk to animals. It was claimed, on several occasions during his youth, that he had been seen conversing with leopards and lions, the previously ferocious beasts would become peaceful and gentle in his presence.

Tafari was educated by a Catholic priest. During his youth he was able to quote freely from the Kebra Negast, The Book of Kufale, The book of Enoch, The shepherd of Hermas, Judith, Ecclesiastics, Tobit, The Matshafa Berna, the 6th and 7th books of Moses, The Book of Eden, all 31 books of the Hebrew bible, the 21 canonical books of the New Testament and numerous other apocryphal and pseudepigraphic works.

On account of Tafari’s knowledge and the rumors circulating about his ability to talk to animals a local priest from Harrar came to visit him. Tafari told the priest about his baptism and how it brought him all the knowledge in the world. He said that the knowledge slowly left him but returned when he began to talk to animals. The priest then asked what the first animal he spoke to was, Tafari then took a piece of paper and some pastels, he drew a sort of dove with multicolored plumage. The priest was about to ask what sort of bird it was when suddenly the bird flew off the paper, out the window, and disappeared into the sky.

Before the age of 16 Tafari held many top administrative positions in the towns of Solali, Baso, Gara, Huleta, and Sidamo. At age 18 he became Governor or "Ras" of Harrar, Ethiopia’s most important province.

Precoronation

At age 24 Ras Tafari was made Chief Advisor, Regent, and Heir Apparent to the throne of Ethiopia. With this power he reorganized his country, by building more schools and hospitals, sending Ethiopians abroad to study and keep various nations of the country together. In 1918 he established a viable foreign policy. He modernized a "third world" country very steep in tradition. In 1923 he was successful in entering Ethiopia into the League of Nations, making Ethiopia the first African nation in the League. "He established The Ethiopian Society for Commercial Industry, which became the government’s main business agent and yielded great profits." (Marcus, 118). In 1924 he visited several European countries, such as England, France and Italy, and permanently abolished the slave trade and slavery in Ethiopia.

Negus

In 1918, with the favor of the country and his proven ability in military and civilian affairs, he was made Negus (king) Tafari. Tafari signed the treaty to obtain Italy’s long-term pledge of peace and friendship and a mechanism for conciliation and arbitration. In 1929 a local Ras declared rebellion against Negus Tafari. Tafari’s army successfully defeated the rebel. The Negus’s wife, the Empress, did not even know Tafari had left that day and he had to return home quickly when he heard that she was ill. The next day the Empress died qualifying Tafari for the position of Emperor.

Negus Negast

The day after the Empress's death, November 2nd 1930, just two years after his coronation as Negus, Tafari was made Emperor of Ethiopia. He took as his titles Haile Selassie I (his Christian name which means power of the trinity), Negus Nagast (which means King of Kings), Lord of Lords, The Conquering Lion of the Tribe Of Judah, Elect of God, and Light of this World. These titles became quite controversial since they were the names assigned for the return of Christ. His coronation was one of lavish and extravagant splendor. The coronation was attended to by international leaders of the highest status, it was broadcasted on radio, recorded with video cameras, photographed and written about all over the world. It was not only a governmental ceremony but a military and religious ceremony.

At the age of 39, Haile Selassie possessed the most power one man could possess. Selassie had serious intentions of Reforming the government, and he began to do so as soon as he was crowned. He hired all new administrators and on July 16th 1931 he wrote a new constitution with 55 articles giving him even more power. "During 1931-1934, the Emperor was busy implementing schemes that augured well for the future. There was a whirlwind of activity: projects and planning fell into place for roads, schools, hospitals, communications, administration, and public services." (Marcus, 136).

The Ethiopian/Italian War

Italy had been planning to take over Ethiopia for quite some time and in 1931 they started working towards their goal. Selassie prepared by sending his army to the border of the country so that the Italians could not enter. This caused a dispute because when the Ethiopian army got to the border they found that the Italian army had already entered the country. When the Italians refused to move the Ethiopian/Italian war began.

In 1935 Italy invaded Ethiopia and Selassie was forced into temporary exile. On June 1936 the Emperor appealed to the League of Nations for help, but was denied. While in exile he stayed in Great Britain where he and his board of international advisors planned the recapture of Ethiopia.

In 1939 3 years after Haile Selassie appeared before the League of Nations the arrival of WWII fulfilled his warning against "the deadly peril", "It is us today and it will be you tomorrow ", "God and history will observe as the witness to the judgment you will give", and "Though you have struck the match in Africa, it is Europe that will burn", which threatened the nations of the league if they abandoned the principle of collective security. This event is often referred to as "Selassie’s curse".

"In 1940, Selassie flew to Sudan and began preparations to free his country." (Williams, 4). He was successful in recapturing Ethiopia with the help of Great Britain. Selassie exercised his kind personality and ability to love and forgive unconditionally when he ordered that no retaliation be taken against the Italians captured.

The Return

The Emperor returned to his throne in 1941, after the British and Ethiopian armies successfully recaptured Ethiopia. "Although restored as Emperor , he had to recreate the authority he had once held." (Comptons, Haile Selassie). He slowly but surely regained all his power and some. In 1955 he wrote yet another constitution this time giving him even more power.

Haile Selassie had a peaceful and productive rule in which he continued to modernize Ethiopia and travel around the world making international allies. Until in 1960, while in Brazil, a section of his Imperial Guard revolted and attempted to install a new ruler. Of course Selassie still had all other Ethiopian forces on his side and he regained his throne in just 4 days.

The Rastafari Religion

In 1961 the Emperor was visited by a Jamaican mission visiting Ethiopia and other African countries. In the mission were 3 Rastafarians, Alavaranga, Planno and Mack. The Rastas presented the Emperor with gifts of carvings, paintings and photographs they likened their visit to the Biblical story of the three wise men who brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Christ.

The Emperor did not meet again with any Rastas until April 21st of 1966, when he visited Jamaica. "The reception he got was the largest welcome ever given to any person coming or leaving Jamaica and put questions to the country’s nationalism, as the crowd included many non-Rastas. When the Emperor’s plane landed due to the size and enthusiasm of the crowd he was unable to come out and shed tears openly." (Williams, 33). During his visit to Jamaica he said to the Rastafarians

"Rastas’ progress must be moral. It is important that spiritual advancement keep pace with material advancement. When this comes to be realized man’s journey towards higher and more lasting values will show more marked progress, while the evil in him recedes into the ground. Knowing that material and spiritual progress are essential to man, we must ceaselessly work for equal attainment of both. Only then shall we be able to acquire that absolute inner calm so necessary to our well being."

The beliefs of Rastafarians vary greatly among them, since there is no set doctrine. The main belief that binds Rastas is that Haile Selassie is of divine force. The birth of this religion could in the Caribbean but if the titles which were reserved for Christ were given to the Emperor by Ethiopia it must have started in Ethiopia. This religion stayed in the Caribbean and possibly in Ethiopia until Bob Marley (the most famous Rastafarian) traveled to the 4 corners of the earth spreading the ideas.

The So Called End of His Reign

On September 12th, 1974 Selassie generously submitted all of his power to the Provisional Military Committee. From then on he lived a more spiritual life meditating, reading, and going to Orthodox mass everyday.

Conclusion

In conclusion Haile Selassie has a lasting impact on Ethiopia and the world. He did more for Ethiopia then anyone had ever done before. Ethiopia loves him for this and to this day his picture can be found in every house, every church, billboards, buildings of all sorts, and basically everywhere in Ethiopia. He completely reformed the government, the economics, the military, Ethiopia and the world’s view of Ethiopia, but most of all he kept Ethiopia free. To this day Ethiopia is the only African country that has always been under its own rule and that is entirely because of Haile Selassie, no man but he could keep Ethiopia free.

"On September 12th 1974 His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I was overthrown by the Military led by Colonel Haile Mengistu Marriam who claimed that he was "too old both mentally and physically to continue any longer in office." So as not to provoke any civil war, the army worked carefully on the mind of the masses whose reverence for His Imperial Majesty was renouned and God like. They used the television media as a means for a well orchestrated propaganda campain to denigrate the Emperor in whom they had found no fault. They also did very well in making the gullible beieve that it was Haile Selassie who was responsible for the then famine in the provinces of Wollo and Tigre that swept away the lives of hundreds of thousands. Indeed this was the incident that was propitiously used by the world as an aliby to imply that His Imperial Majesty was a wicked autocrat. This is why the Rastaman says that the record breaking famine in the Ethiopia during the mid eighties was a deliberate act of God to embarass Ethioia in particular, and the world in general for upbraiding HIM when he was Emperor of Ethiopia.
Emperor Haile Selassie I does not need this throne right now because he has already fullfilled all the necessary prophesies related th this and He has now gone to prepare for the history breaking World War III Revelations.
It is said that the Military on the personal request of the Emperor took HIM to Chapel to worship one morning; he returned on the first two mornings, but he never returned on the third day. When the soldiers went to investigate he was no where to be found and there was no door seen where he might have escaped through. In deep trouble they concocted the story that he had died under mysterious circumstances and buried in an unmarked grave without even a funeral. This was on July 24th, 1975."

Idea

If you wish to learn about the Emperor I would suggest searching and investigating for there is a lot of information out there. I would not go by what I or anyone else says but I would search and find out for yourself what you believe.

I would also like to take it upon myself to mention in this post some of the passages that are in the King James version of the Bible that I and many others have found that speak of Christ returning upon the Earth that I believe point to His Majesty:
