Calypso world mourns Jazzy Pantin

The calypso fraternity has been plunged into mourning with the passing of Carlyle ‘Jazzy’ Pantin, owner and manager of the Calypso Revue tent. Pantin, 75, who had been ailing for some time with heart disease, died around 5 am yesterday at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.

The word on the street is that the three sons of Sangre Grande are back in Trinidad for a couple weeks. Plug pulled on New York soca station

Local artistes yesterday described the closure of New York-based radio station WLIB (1190 AM) as a blow to the region’s music industry. Known as soca’s premier radio station in Brooklyn, New York, for about 30 years, the station informed its mostly West Indian staff last week that it would be halting the airing of Caribbean programming.

Shurwayne Winchester said yesterday that his Road March victory was a gift to Tobago. The Tobago-born artiste is from Signal Hill. Winchester’s 2004 soca hit ‘Look De Band Coming’ was played 255 times over Carnival Monday and Tuesday, leaving Destra Garcia in a distant second position with ‘Bonnie & Clyde,’ which was played 103 times.

An apparent feud between soca artistes Denise ‘Saucy Wow’ Belfon and Destra Garcia exploded on Thursday night, when they clashed head-on during a gig they were billed to perform at. The event, Angostura Limited’s annual calypso competition, which was hosted at its Laventille home base, came to a halt when the two divas engaged in what was described as a fist fight in the car park of the compound.
