Calypsonians bid farewell to Mighty Terror
The calypso fraternity said its final goodbyes to the "golden voice" of Fitzgerald Cornelius Henry, better known as The Mighty Terror, yesterday. His funeral was held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port of Spain and was attended by many calypsonians, entertainers, dignitaries and Culture Minister Joan Yuille-Williams.
Machel Montano sets record with Road March 2007 win
Soca superstar Machel Montano secured more than ten times the amount of airplay of his nearest rival on the streets with his song, "Jumbie", to win the 2007 National Road March title. It is the third time Montano, 33, has won the title. He first won the title in 1997 for his smash hit "Big Truck". Last year, his collaboration with Patrice Roberts on the song "Band of the Year" earned him another title.

Cro Cro on Sunday claimed his fourth National Calypso Monarch title when he performed a humorous calypso entitled "Nobody Ain't Go Know" before the judges at the 2007 edition of the Dimanche Gras at the Jean Pierre Complex, Port of Spain.

Iwer George is the 2007 International Power Soca Monarch, while Bajan artiste, Biggie Irie, captured the Groovy Soca Monarch title at Friday's finals of the competitions at Hasely Crawford Stadium, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain.

Soca diva Destra Garcia gave the Bacchanal Wednesday crowd a tongue lashing after they threw glow sticks at her on stage during her performance. The fiery singer whose big hit this season is titled "I Dare You" reportedly chastised patrons saying: "Don't behave like jackasses. It's hard enough for a woman running a band by herself in this industry. So don't behave like a jackass."
Soca stalwart Ellis Chow Lin On dies suddenly
The local entertainment industry reacted with shock and sadness to the news of the death of soca music pioneer Ellis Chow Lin On. Chow Lin On died yesterday morning. He was rushed to the St Clair medical Complex on Wednesday evening, after he fainted while supervising a recording session at Carl "Beaver" Henderson's studio for Shurwayne Winchester, whom he managed.
Violence smears MTV Tempo Turns One
A stabbing, several fist fights and a poorly organised programme marred the local leg of MTV Tempo first anniversary concert series, Tempo Turns One, on Saturday night. The crowd was sent running in all directions during Machel Montano and Xtatik's performance, when a group of young men clashed in the middle of the venue in the carpark of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

Caribana 2006 revels in multiculturalism

You've got to love a parade that doesn't really get underway until almost four hours after its scheduled start time and yet still has an estimated one million revellers dancing along under the hot sun without complaint.
Caribana 2006 - supposedly bigger than ever
This year's Caribana festival, with tomorrow's signature colourful parade, will be the biggest ever, organizers say, despite the months of political wrangling that delayed preparations for the annual event. "It's not only a black community affair," festival chief executive officer Eddison Doyle said yesterday. "It's for all Torontonians. Let's enjoy and see what each other has to offer."
Police to use cameras for Caribana
Toronto Police say they plan to use security cameras to watch over the partiers who crowd a downtown stretch of Yonge Street every Caribana weekend, a move praised by local businesses and organizers of the Caribbean festival. Police would not say how many cameras are being rolled out, but said each one will be marked by a sign warning people they are under police surveillance.

The City of Toronto is working with a Mas band group to put on this year's version of Caribana despite the Caribbean Cultural Committee's demands to continue staging the popular summer festival.

Man alleges attack by Machel and Slaughter
Police are investigating a report from a San Fernando man that he was attacked and beaten by a group of men, but Dawg E Slaughter who said he was on the scene when the incident occured, yesterday described the allegation as one of "all kinda madness". The alleged altercation supposedly occurred around 9 p.m. on Carnival Monday at Grey Street, St Clair.

Soca music is not devil music - Bounty Killer
"Some people say soca music is devil music but soca music is of the people and any music of the people could never be devil music," Bounty Killer said referring to comments made by Jamaican reggae artiste I Wayne last year. Shock as Shurwayne Winchester sweeps National Soca Monarch Finals
Shock then anger was the reaction of the majority upon the announcement that Shurwayne Winchester had dethroned Bunji Garlin to capture the 2006 International Soca Monarch title. Even before the pronouncement was ended the crowd began to boo and call for Bunji. Thankfully, unlike in previous years when the people did not agree with the judges decision at the Soca Monarch finals, there was no violence.

Several people were hit by rubber bullets when police opened fire on a massive crowd thronged outside the Licensing Fete 2006, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain, in the early hours of yesterday morning. Earlier, the police had fired in the air to gain control of the crowd which it was feared was getting out of hand.
