Palance wins Road March 2010

JW and Blaze with Palance have undoubtedly won Road March 2010 in Trinidad by leaps and bounds. Even without the official results being announced, Palance was easily the most played tune for Carnival 2010. It will be more difficult to figure out who place second and third in the Road March race. An official with the NCC, has even stated there is really no reason to tally the figures.

Palance is the word for Carnival 2010 in Trinidad and Tobago. In fact Palance has now launched the dynamic duo of Jason Williams and Ancil Isaac otherwise known as JW and Blaze into the International Soca Monarch history as they beat Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez into second place while palancing with the crowd. Some even believe that Palance will also take the Road March title come Carnival Tuesday.

Destra Garcia is pregnant

Soca songstress Destra Garcia has announced her pregnancy, and is expecting her first child in January 2010. The father is her boyfriend, manager, producer Brian Morris. Destra know for her megahits, Tremble It, Sassiness, Bonnie and Clyde, I Dare You, Obsessive Winers and Carnival, said she had some “mixed emotions at first”.

Sheldon 'Shel Shok' Benjamin dead from cancer

Influential, talented and highly respected producer Sheldon ‘Shel Shok’ Benjamin has died from a rare form of cancer, Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma which attacks the lymph nodes. Shel Shok had worked with top talent in the music business including Machel Montano, Alison Hinds, Destra Garcia and even General Grant.

Murray charged with nude Precious pics on Facebook

News presenter Davy Murray pleaded not guilty yesterday, when he appeared in court charged with distributing pornographic material, allegedly of soca artiste Precious. Murray, 32, appeared in Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Marcia Murray (no relation). Accused Murray, an employee of Radio Vision Limited, was granted TT$50,000 bail on Saturday night by a Justice of the Peace, while in custody at Besson Street Police Station. 

Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez in hospital

Trinidad and Tobago and moreso fans of the reigning National Road March/Power and Groovy Soca Monarch, Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez, will have to spend the coming days on pins and needles, as well as in prayer for Lyons and her unborn child. Lyons-Alvarez was yesterday admitted to the Mount Hope Maternity Hospital due to complications with the pregnancy.

Fay-Ann clean sweep for Carnival 2009

Fay-Ann Lyons Alvarez created history in yesterday when she became the first female International Power Soca Monarch ever, soundly beating her husband, defending monarch Bunji Garlin into second place. Fay-Ann also won the Groovy Soca Monarch competition as well as the People's Choice Award, having garnered all of the 15,000 votes cast.

Shurwayne Winchester and Traffik split

Reigning International Groovy Soca Monarch, Shurwayne Winchester, has resigned as a permanent member of the soca band Traffik. His publicist yesterday issued a press release stating that Winchester will officially exit the band on October 16 in what is an "amicable" separation.

Machel Montano tops International Reggae and World Music Awards 2008

Machel Montano, the Trinidad and Tobago soca superstar, has copped top honours at the International Reggae and World Music Awards held recently at the Apollo Theatre in New York City. The awards included Best Calypso/Soca Entertainer, Most Outstanding Stage Personality of the Year and the much-coveted, Bob Marley Entertainer of the Year Award.

Scotiabank has announced a multiyear sponsorship deal with Caribana, one of the most popular and largest Caribbean Carnivals in North America. This comes as excellent news for the Caribana management since the last couple years have been hit and miss when it comes to funding of the annual event.

Bunji wins Soca Monarch 2008 over fan fave Faye-Ann

The affectionately called "first couple" of soca, Faye-Ann Lyons and Bunji Garlin were top performers at the International Power Soca Monarch Finals 2008 held at the Queen's Park Oval. Bunji placed first, Iwer George second, with fan favourite Faye-Ann Lyons third.

Kewal "DJ Lalo" Ragbir is dead

Popular DJ and businessman Kewal "DJ Lalo" Ragbir has died in vehicular accident on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in Trinidad days away from his 50th birthday celebrations. His loss will put a damper on Carnival 2008 celebrations as Lalo played an integral part in the annual festival.

Trinidad Carnival 2008 challenges - Machel, Blaxx and Bunji

Machel Montano laid stake to the Road March 2008 title at the annual Eyes Wide Shut fete held at Queen's Park Oval on Tuesday night. Machel had words for Blaxx in another spell binding performance, while Blaxx had words for Bunji Garlin in the Soca Monarch chase.

Destra Garcia back with a bang for Carnival 2008

Destra Garcia has recreated herself for Carnival 2008. So much so, that she has gone back to the roots of what made her the soca diva that she is. With a new look, old mantra and same good looks, Destra is poised for success for Carnival 2008. "I was looking for a new style," Destra says of the rougher, raunchier attitude that's emerged in most of her six 2008 offerings.

Machel Montano warned by police in Zen: No crotch grabbing

In what is appearing to be very comical, police attempted to halt a show at Zen Nightclub on Friday featuring Machel Montano, Benjai, Patrice Roberts and Zan. The police told Machel, "Stop allowing the women to touch your (testicles)." Frustrated Montano said, "If all yuh want to lock meh up, lock meh up."

Zan misses Zen brawl court date

Joel Zan Fezeck, jointly charged with Machel Montano, Rodney Benjai Le Blanc and songwriter Kernel Roberts in the assault of Brandis Browne outside Zen nightclub on Keate Street, Port Of Spain, missed a court date yesterday, with his lawyer informing Magistrate Maureen Baboolal-Gafoor that "I do not know if he took a nap while there. He is unable to be reached via his phone".

Neil Iwer George now known as The Boss

Veteran soca star Neil "Iwer" George has finally revealed his new stage name. George told a gathering of about 2,000 fans that he would now be known as "The Boss" during his concert appearance at the Soca for Summer show held on Saturday night at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo, Trinidad.

DPP blocks all charges against Machel and Slaughter until review

The police have been blocked from taking any further action against soca stars Machel Montano and Derek "Mr Slaughter" Pereira until Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Geoffrey Henderson reviews the case. Slaughter went to the St. Clair Police Station twice to turn himself in, only to be told the officers were not ready.

Soca Mafia in Trinidad and Tobago - Reality or myth?

For all of you left out of the dark the Soca Mafia is what determines what is going to be a hit in Trinidad and Tobago, the land of soca. For the past decade the Soca Mafia has been in existence due to Chinese Laundry and other affiliates. Chinese Laundry partly owns or has some interest in Club Zen through longtime business partner Johnny Soong. The two combined promote some of the biggest events in Carnival. Chinese Laundry also partly owns, if not owns one of the most popular radio stations (96.1 WEFM) in Trinidad as well as one of the best production studios.

Machel Montano: I am not involved in Zen incident

Soca artiste Machel Montano is denying claims that he fired any punches in a brawl which landed a 24-year-old Russell Pollonaise in hospital nursing head injuries. However, Montano, through his mother Elizabeth, admitted that he was at Zen nightclub located on Keate Street, Port-of-Spain, when the incident occurred early yesterday morning.

Belmont police to question Machel and others over Zen incident

Soca artistes Machel Montano, Benjai, Shall Marshall and Kernel Roberts are to be questioned by Belmont police following an incident outside Club Zen yesterday morning which left a patron, Russell Pollonaise with injuries.

Bacchanal Jamaica Carnival 2007

You just never know what you will see at Bacchanal. Surely, the glitter, skimpy costumes, big trucks moving at a slow pace and dancing are all a part of it. This year for the first time, Bacchanal introduced a live band which added a lot more flavour to the groove.
