Usain Bolt, in an event not considered his best, has broken the 100m record at 9.72 seconds. The previous record was 9.74 seconds held by fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell. Bolt broke the record at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York. Bolt is now the world's fastest man.

In the top performance of the night, Powell outgunned a pair of Caribbean colleagues and was very pleased to deliver the sub-10 clocking he was hoping for in front of 15,000 fans at Partizan Stadium.
