A shipment of ganja destined for Barbados was Monday intercepted at the Norman Manley International Airport's Fumigation and Quarantine Centre by the Jamaica Customs Department's Contraband Enforcement Team (CET).

The quantity and value of the weed were not ascertained. However, two persons - one said to be a woman who resides in Bull Bay, St Andrew, the other a taxi driver - have been detained in connection with the find.

The consignment was targeted for inspection, but the attention of the CET officers was further drawn to a carton box, declared as containing 11 new electrical motors. The officers, however, discovered that the motors were used.

The weed, the CET said, was concealed in fibreglass and the parcels placed in the interior compartment of the electrical motor armatures.

A spokesman for the CET said the final destination of the weed could have been the United Kingdom where it would have guaranteed higher returns.

"When these types of shipments are going to Barbados we usually estimate that the final destination is the UK," Omar Walker, the CET's acting director, told the Observer.

"They try to move the contraband from a country of a higher risk to one of a lower risk, like Barbados, and then to the country of final destination," he added.
