West Indies defeated Bangladesh by 138 runs in a Pool B match of the Champions Trophy at Rose Bowl here Wednesday.

West Indies made 269 for three wickets in 50 overs and dismissed Bangladesh for 131 in 39.3 overs.

Bangladesh won the toss and asked West Indies to take the strike.

Openers Chris Gayle (99, 132 balls, 6x4s) and Wavell Hinds (82, 199 balls, 8x4s, 2x6s) gave West Indies a flying start with their 192-runs in 40 overs.

In the last 10 overs, the West Indies middle order, comprising Ramnaresh Sarwan (30), Brian Lara (20) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (18 not out), smashed 77 runs.

But after such a huge opening-wicket stand, the team failed to touch 300.

Pacer Tapash Basiya was the lone Bangladeshi bowler to take wickets. He took two for 58 in 10 overs.

Like their bowlers, the Bangladesh batsmen too failed and did not put up any resistance against a lively pace attack.

After a poor start, half the Bangladeshi team was back in the pavilion for just 26 runs. It was not expected from the lower order batsmen to do anything extraordinary and they too crumbled without any fight.

Only pacer Khaled Mahmud (34 not out, 51 balls, 2x4s) entertained for a while before the entire team was dismissed.

Merv Dillon captured five wickets for 29 in 10 overs.
