A man described by police as a ?seasoned criminal? but hailed by some as a local ?Robin Hood,? was gunned down in Laventille yesterday.
The killing of URP foreman Rennie Paul, 40, of Upper Pashley Street, Laventille, has brought to eight the number of people who have been killed so far this month.
Probers said the motive was reprisal.
Investigators said shortly after 11 am, Paul, a former murder accused, was in the company of another man at Lower Pashley Street.
At the time, they were seated in Paul?s Honda Civic which was parked at the side of the road. Paul left the car and went to a nearby lane to talk to a man whom he knew.
They began to argue.
The man who was in Paul?s car got out and urged him to get back into the car.
As they got back into the car and were about to drive off, the man Paul had argued with reportedly fired several shots at the front windscreen.
He then walked over to the driver?s side and fired more shots. Paul got out of the car, collapsed and died.
Investigators said he was hit several times in the head, legs and groin.
They said he was wanted for questioning on two recent murders in Laventille.
Pashley Street residents described Paul as a ?good man who tried to help everyone.?
?He used to really look out for the small man. He wasn?t bad as people say,? one man said.
After the shooting, a team of officers from the Besson Street CID visited the scene and cordoned off the area for several hours.
The man who was with Paul was interviewed by police.
Spent shells recovered in the car have been sent to the Forensic Science Centre, St James, for ballistic analysis. In 1993, Paul was acquitted of the murder of prison officer Jaikaran Goolcharan, who was strangled during a jailbreak in 1990.
The men who escaped that day were Paul, Glen Ashby, Lincoln Guerra, Horace Polo, Rawle Kennedy, Dexter McDowell and Rajendra Krishna.
Senior lawmen said Paul was a notorious criminal who was involved in attempted murders, kidnapping, shooting with intent, including that of police officers, and robbery with aggravation.
