Matthews Lane strongman Donald "Zeeks" Phipps may find himself in trouble with the law because of comments he made on a radio programme about using his guns on the side of the law.
Attempts to contact Zeeks were unsuccessful but Superintendent Delroy Hewitt of the Denham Town police station, which monitors the community in which the area leader lives, told the Observer yesterday that he had no knowledge of him being granted a firearm licence.
"I don't know about him owning a legal gun," Hewitt said "The moment he got it, we would have to know."
Another superintendent at the Kingston Central Police station, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also said police there had no knowledge of Zeeks having a firearm licence. Though the superintendent of police in charge of an area must be integrally involved in the processing of all applications for gun licences, there have been instances where permits are obtained outside the area in which the applicant lives.
Phipps made the comments about his gun use Wednesday afternoon during an interview on the Power 106 current affairs show Nationwide. The discussion had centred around a rumour that he had been given 48 hours to leave Matthews Lane. The rumour, which left downtown Kingston tense, was denied by Phipps and his rivals.
The area was peaceful yesterday with police and soldiers patrolling sections of the busy, commercial centre as persons hurriedly went about their business. Cops, Forbes said, were taking no chances.
"It did not start yesterday and we have been on top of it," he told reporters. "We will continue to monitor the situation."
