Hours after Rodney Deosaran was released by kidnappers yesterday morning, Freeport police swooped down on his family mansion to search for arms and ammunition.

Deosaran was released after being held for 42 days by kidnappers. He was released somewhere in the Calcutta area, and was picked up by the police.

He was taken to the family doctor to be examined and said to be in good condition. Sources close to the family, however, said Deosaran lost a lot of weight.

Deosaran was then taken to his father?s mansion on Southern Main Road, St Mary?s, Freeport.

Police refused to say whether or not a ransom was paid for the release of the 28-year-old garbage truck despatcher.

Rodney was nabbed by three masked men who stormed the house of his in-laws at Jerry Junction, Orange Field Road, Carapichiama, around 9.30 pm on July 4.

No one has been held in connection with the kidnapping, but the police assured that investigations were continuing into the matter.

Yesterday afternoon, however, police were conducting another investigation into the Deosaran family?this time for arms and ammunition allegedly stashed away in the family mansion.

Acting WP Insp Salandy and Sgt Ajit Persad headed a team to the family home shortly after 6pm to conduct the search.

Sources said the search was linked to a report lodged at the station by media workers that an unidentified man on the compound pulled out a gun, pointed it at them and threatened to shoot them if they did not leave the front of the gate to the family?s home.

Annmarie Ganase and cameraman Raoul Borde, of TTT, and Derek Bhoopsingh, of TV6, had approached the front gates of the sprawling mansion, seeking interviews with the family, when an unidentified man whipped out a gun and ordered them to leave.

Shelly Dass, senior anchor and producer at TTT, said her colleagues were left shaken by the incident.

?They were quite upset. The man pointed the gun in their faces and said ?I will shoot you.? For two of them to become traumatised it would have to be really bad. I am very disgusted with that,? she said.

Ganase and Borde lodged a report at Freeport Police Station.

The ransom ordeal

? The kidnappers had initially demanded $7 million from Deosaran?s father the day after the abduction.

? Jaharwalal Deosaran, the victim?s father who owns Amalgamated Sanitation, reportedly paid a ransom of close to $280,000 sometime last month.

? However, Deosaran was not released and his father went to the media, pleading with the kidnappers to free his son.

? Two men, who claimed to have infomation on Deosaran?s kidnapping, tried to dupe his father into paying $25,000. They were arrested during a sting operation and charged.

? Last week Deosaran told the media he had severed all ties with the AKS, and was taking matters into his own hands.
