An ambush on freed murder accused Garvin "Beam" Sookram on Wednesday night ended with the slaying of two men he was liming with, police believe.
By Darryl HeeralalExact details of what happened were still not clear up to last night as Sookram, who is assisting police with their investigations, has not volunteered a statement as yet.
Wednesday's ambush was the second attack on the Sookram clan in a month, since five members of the family were freed of murder in June.
Police got a call around 7.30 p.m., that gunshots had been heard in the area and, when they arrived, found the two dead men, Cyrus in a track and Hinds in the front passenger seat of a car.
Hinds was unarmed while Cyrus still had his gun, a .380 Lorcin pistol, in his waist.
The driver of the car, a 20-year-old Claxton Bay man, is assisting police.
Sookram who was shot in the right arm, was taken to hospital in a private car.
He lives a few houses away from where the shooting took place and it is believed Sookram ran for his life when confronted by the gunmen.
What police know so far is that Sookram was standing in a track off Granado Street talking with Cyrus, Hinds and the driver of the white B-14 Nissan Sentra.
When the shooting started, the driver of the car ran out of the neighbourhood and straight to the Morvant Police Station.
Police are working along the lines that there was an ambush based on the type and number of spent shells found at the scene and the pattern of the shooting and the fact that it appeared as though Cyrus did not have the time to take his gun out and was killed while running away.
Eight spent 9 mm shells, three live 9 mm rounds and three spent shotgun cartridges were recovered at the scene.
Neither shotguns nor 9 mm weapons were found.
Officers at the scene included Snr Supt Waldron Bishop, Insps Koon Koon and Ancil Coa, Sgt Keith Louison, Cpls Ranjit and Jacob and PC Ramjohn.
Hinds, who was shot twice in May was from Diego Martin while Cyrus lived at Carolina Village, Couva.
On June 28, two of Sookram's relatives-Ronald 'Doom' Gaskin and Junior 'Country' Sookram, 27 - were shot dead while they slept at their Sawmill Avenue home.
Both men, along with Garvin, Hassan Sanchez and John Wayne 'Mouse' Alleyne, had been freed of murder less than 48-hours before they were killed.
They were accused of killing Roger 'One Arm' Alexander in 2000.
Police questioned two men from the 8th Avenue, Malick area in connection with those murders and it is believed that the killers on Wednesday night might be from that same area.
The killers appeared to have gone to Granado Street on foot.
