The event, Angostura Limited?s annual calypso competition, which was hosted at its Laventille home base, came to a halt when the two ?divas? engaged in what was described as a ?fist fight? in the car park of the compound.
Both women reportedly engaged in the cat fight in full view of workers and patrons of the event.
The incident was confirmed by Angostura Corporate Communications Manager Giselle La Ronde-West yesterday.
The women, she said, have been performing at their events for years and apparently had a ?misunderstanding? Thursday night.
?We have built a relationship with them,? she said.
?They have been performing for us for years and I do not want to jeopardise that.?
Sources close to Belfon revealed she arrived first at the event, but did not perform because of the incident.
Destra, who arrived after Belfon, got to perform before her.
However, when Destra got on stage, the DJ started playing Belfon?s rhythm.
According to an account of one eyewitness, Destra left the stage at this point and found Belfon, and an argument began.
It escalated and Destra threw a glass of water on Belfon, who was trying to walk away from her colleague at the time.
Belfon turned around and was hit, then reacted immediately and an all-and-out cat fight erupted.
Two of Destra?s male friends then joined the fight.
La Ronde-West, who was not at the event, said she only heard about it and could not say much.
However, in a telephone interview yesterday, Belfon said she was really hurt by the entire incident.
?I am emotionally hurt by this whole situation,? she said, moved to tears.
?Destra is somebody who I really love and admire in the art form. I do not know why she acted like that with me.?
Belfon confirmed Destra threw water on her and described her behaviour as strange.
?I was walking away from her to avoid anything...she started it,? Belfon added.
La Ronde-West said the incident happened in the car park and had nothing to do with their event.
?Whatever took place had no dealings with us,? she said.
She added that because of privacy, she was not in a position to say whether the two received the balance of their payment for the event.
However, it is reported they were not paid by the organisers.
Singing Sandra (Sandra de Vignes), who was at Belfon?s home yesterday, also commented on the issue.
Saying she considered the two women to be her own children, Singing Sandra said she would not be part of any negativity.
?These women have achieved so much positive things in the art form. We are all about promoting peace,? she said.
?I am speaking on Denise?s behalf. Leave her alone. Any questions refer them to me.?
Destra?s manager, Brian Williams, who witnessed the incident, said he had no comment to give to the press.
Both women reportedly did not perform at Spektakula?s ?Band meets Band? fete afterwards.
However, they are both scheduled to perform at the 12th edition of the National Lottery Classic International Soca Monarch final at the Queen?s Park Oval on February 20.
