A $7 million ransom has been demanded for the safe return of a sanitation contractor. Rodney Deosaran, 28, was abducted from the home of his in-laws at Jerry Junction, Orange Field Road, Carapichaima, sometime after 8 pm on Sunday.

Relatives said three masked men armed with guns and a cutlass jumped out of a Mazda 323 car and ran into the open yard of Deosaran?s mother-in-law, Judith Ali.

Deosaran was socialising with relatives in a shed outside the board house which is partly surrounded by galvanised roofing sheets to the front, but has no gates, as construction is taking place on the site.

The men snatched Deosaran, son of Jaharwalal Deosaran, owner of Amalgamated Sanitation Co of El Socorro.

His grandfather, the late Balraj Deosaran, was a former PNM MP for Chaguanas, elected in 1971 during the no-vote campaign. He served one term.

Before bundling Deosaran into the car, the kidnappers robbed and tied up all those present.

They were said to have headed west along Waterloo Road.

Neighbours said they heard screaming and rushed to the scene and the Freeport police were called in.

The AKS visited the scene and returned yesterday morning to question relatives.

Deosaran?s wife, Jamie, visited the Orange Valley Hindu temple with her mother and other relatives yesterday to hold a special puja for the abducted man.

Pundit Neil Maharaj of Bay Street conducted the proceedings.

After she returned home Jamie sat holding their two-year-old son and cried uncontrollably while looking at a picture of her husband.

Relatives said she was in no mood to talk to reporters.

A male relative criticised a statement by Prime Minister Patrick Manning last week in Parliament during the debate on the police reform bills.

The relative said Manning?s haste to blame the Opposition for future criminal activity might have just fuelled criminal elements with an excuse to carry on illicit activities.

A security guard was posted at the front gates of the sprawling 60-plus acre home of Deosaran?s father.

He said the family was not taking questions from reporters and he was not allowed to say anything further.
