Although it did not have beginner's luck, Beenie Man's digital Pro-tools studio seems to be now ready for the big times.
Beenie Man's brother and right hand lieutenant, Blue, told THE STAR that the 'Badword' and the 'Freakside' went belly up after release. The 'Scoobay' however, which was made by deejay Mario C is seeing much better days.
"The first two rhythms never get any promotion so they never took off," he explained. "That got us discouraged but the Scoobay rhythm changed all of that. We had the help of Tony Matterhorn who gave it some aggressive marketing in the dancehalls. Because he is so influential, we named him as a producer as well. Just last week our distributor called and told us everything we put out is gone already."
With all the publicity and international attention he has garnered over the years some wonder why would Beenie Man need a studio anyway?
According to Blue, it was was not intentional but just progression. "Originally it was just a private thing for Beenie to record a few things while he was at home," he explained. "You know sometimes he is here and get a vibe he wants to record it right away, or another time he may want to fix the voice on a few tracks. That's how we started the studio."
One thing led to another, he continued, and rhythm after rhythm is now being born there. With the studio came the label 357 Records, formed between Beenie Man, Blue and Mario C. Their aim, according to Blue, is to put out not just rhythms but artistes as well. So far they have signed Razor, Martinez, Chickaboo and Sim Simma.
