The incident occurred shortly after 4.30 pm at the Petit Valley/Diego Martin stand located at South Quay.
Aldwyn Wilson, owner of the stolen car, a white Toyota Corolla, said he had just parked his vehicle a few feet away from the hub and got out to look for a female friend.
?Two seconds later, when I look back, I see somebody driving off with my car. Well boy, I eh waste no time,? Wilson said.
He said he immediately ran behind the car and after several daring tries, he managed to enter the front passenger seat while the vehicle was in motion.
?I pull the man jersey to try to get him to stop, but he was just fighting up with me,? said Wilson, a mechanic from St Lucien Road, Diego Martin.
?I was also trying to get the gear into park. There was a lot of struggle but when the vehicle reach by the maxis, the gear go in.?
Traffic Branch officers, who were at the time stationed at the busy area, immediately called for back-up.
Members of the joint police/army patrol, lawmen from the Crime Suppression Unit and Port-of-Spain CID responded. The entire area was cordoned off for about an hour.
The suspect then got out of the car and tried to run. It is also reported he attempted to snatch a gun from one of the officers.
A shot was heard and the suspect was hit in the leg.
He was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he is now under police guard.
