Soca: 3 Suns return

The word on the street is that the three sons of Sangre Grande are back in Trinidad for a couple weeks. That?s right, ?the bad boys of Ragga Soca", Damian ?Ace? Oliverie, Sherwin ?Menace? Jeremiah and Olufemi ?Crym? Williams have returned after promoting their new album, Word On The Street, at various locations in New York over the last two months.

?We?re happy to have the guys return safely home, since leaving just after Carnival,? said their manager, Rachel Holder. ?They performed at various spots in New York, including Cafe Omar, The Ark and Club Tobago during their stay and they?re scheduled to make appearances in Houston, Texas, Washington and Miami in the coming months, but they decided to come home and continue working on their next album in the meantime.?

In addition to their distribution deal with VP Records?the New York-based recording label, which includes a large contingent of prominent Caribbean artistes on its roster?the group recently instituted another significant change, in an effort to improve their position in the global music marketplace.

Formerly operating under the collective moniker, Treason, the group has now changed the spelling of their sobriquet to 3Suns?but the pronunciation, however, remains the same.

?We decided to adopt the new spelling for a number of reasons,? explained Holder. ?Firstly, we received information about the existence of another group with the same name, spelled the exact same way. Considering our long-term plan to infiltrate the major markets, this was a most undesirable situation indeed. We attempted to negotiate with the parties concerned, but they would not budge, so we opted to change our spelling, rather than to adopt a whole new name.

?Looking around us, we arrived at the new spelling quite easily: the number three was obvious and the connection with the sun and the Caribbean, as well as the boys being three sons themselves made for a quick and painless resolution of the issue. Thus, all their new material will be released with the new spelling and all promotional material will include the change as well. Same group, evolving and improving as always, we just made the name easier to write and spell!?

Regarding copyright infringement issues and recovering royalties from their previously-recorded material, Holder insisted that ?all 3Suns? business was in-order?.

?Well, as far as the royalties are concerned,? she explained. ?We?re not going to have any problems because all their publishing rights are registered under Sweaty Fete Publishing Limited and their distribution deal was also signed under that name. As far as copyright issues, we came to an agreement with the parties concerned that once we changed our spelling, any promotions undertaken using the previous spelling would remain uncontested. So, on the legal end, we?re secure and the guys are looking forward to etching this new spelling upon the minds and hearts of their loyal fan base.?

Holder informed us that the group will soon launch and begin promoting their Word On The Street LP in Miami and added that their VP Records team is currently promoting the album in London, using a series of radio, magazine and Internet contests and cd give-aways.
