Trinidad and Tobago football team arrived in Crown Point, Tobago yesterday amidst calls for hometown boy, Dwight Yorke, to be included in the squad for Sunday?s friendly international against Northern Ireland at Bacelot.
There has been speculation on Yorke?s return to international football after the Blackburn Rovers striker met with coach Bertille St Clair in Scotland and expressed an interest in training ahead of the Northern Ireland encounter. It will be the first time that Yorke will be playing at the venue named after him.
It will also be St Clair?s first senior international assignment at the Stadium.
St Clair said Yorke was expected and once he took part in the training session, the possibility of him playing would be discussed.
?The good thing is for him to take up the opportunity to play at the Dwight Yorke Stadium. ?I will certainly go for that. But I am not Dwight and hopefully he will think that way and let the people of Tobago see him play again,? St Clair added.
Fans in the sister-isle have been anxiously waiting to see the team play there especially with St Clair at the helm.
And they are hoping that Yorke, their most famous player, could also grace them with his presence.
St Clair yesterday stressed the importance of a solid performance against Northern Ireland.
The team?s arrival in Tobago was delayed by some five hours, forcing the arrival at Crown Point to shift to 3 pm.
A training session was schedule at 5pm at Shaw Park.
?I am happy that we are playing here after that loss to Scotland. I hope the players take the Scottish experience as a lesson. We need to work on certain aspects of our game over and over because we will be playing against a team that plays similar to Scotland. The idea to bring the team to Tobago was a great one because it is a wonderful opportunity for the people of Tobago to be more involved and see the guys in action.?
The Tobago House of Assembly has arranged for the team to also be involved in a coaching clinic for youngsters from various schools throughout the sister isle at Shaw Park tomorrow from 4pm.
