PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, June 3 (Reuters) - The world's largest methanol plant, Atlas Methanol Co., began production this week in Trinidad, the company said on Thursday.

"While the plant is now preparing for various performance tests, the daily capacity of 5,000 tonnes is expected to be reached within one month," the company said.
The Atlas plant will be supplied with 164 million cubic feet of gas a day by BP Trinidad and Tobago. Methanol from the plant will be transported by tanker to major markets in North America and Europe.
Methanex, headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, is the world's largest producer and marketer of methanol. Its Titan Methanol Co., also in Trinidad, produces 850,000 tonnes per year.
BP Trinidad and Tobago is the largest gas producer in Trinidad and Tobago, producing approximately 1.8 billion cubic feet of gas a day. BP Trinidad and Tobago is also a shareholder in the Atlantic LNG joint venture, which produces some 10 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas annually.
