These are some of the details from the just-released Secondary Schools Behavioural Surveillance Survey researched and published by the Division of Youth Affairs in randomly selected public and private schools.
The survey showed one in five children between the ages of 11 and 16 had vaginal, oral and anal sex. A number of them, both male and female, had several partners.
Not only does the report, compiled through a self-administered, confidential questionnaire, confirmed the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports fears about the threat of HIV/AIDS destroying a generation of young people, but the age group involved clearly falls into the category of ?statutory rape?, said Youth Affairs Director Richard Carter.
?Actually, the mean age of sexual intercourse is 12 years, second form at secondary school,? he told Government and school officials and representatives of the National HIV/AIDS Commission, as he analysed the findings last week.
When students from 11 to 16 were asked if they had sex in the last four months, 22.2 per cent of the boys and 21 per cent of the girls said they had vaginal sex.
With reference to oral sex, Carter said that 5.5 per cent of the first formers ?had had oral sex?.
