According to reports, just around 1.30 p.m., security officer Derrick Simmons, 43, was in a West Indian Tobacco Company Ltd (Witco) delivery van assisting in the delivery of cigarettes to the A+B Cafe on the corner of Salandy Street and Diego Martin Main Road, when, as he alighted from the vehicle, he was approached by two armed men.

One of the men demanded that Simmons hand over his rifle and he refused. He was then shot twice, once in the head and once in the chest.

One group of people the Express spoke to on the scene yesterday said the men shot the security guard with his own gun but this was not confirmed. The two men were said to have escaped on foot.

Over the last few years guards employed by Hellers Security Ltd have come under attack.
