Peter Alexander was only 23 years old, but he had already been charged or convicted for arms and ammunition, kidnapping, robbery and assault, and questioned in connection with at least three murders.
He was released from prison four months ago.
Alexander was killed at an apartment belonging to his lover's girlfriend, at Mt Moriah Road, Vistabella.
The killer also shot a 23-year-old woman in the right leg, who is under police guard at hospital.
Alexander, who had no fixed address, reportedly had an altercation with his killer earlier in the day.
