Usain Bolt, in an event not considered his best, has broken the 100m record at 9.72 seconds. The previous record was 9.74 seconds held by fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell. Bolt broke the record at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York. Bolt is now the world's fastest man.

According to Bolt, "I wasn't really looking for a world record, but it was there for the taking." By the halfway point of the race, Bolt had blazed a significant lead on the other favourite, American Tyson Gay. While Bolt took the race in record time, Gay finished at 9.85 seconds. "Obviously, I have some work to do," Gay said. "Right now, it's hats off to Bolt. Today was his day."

"Just coming here, knowing a lot of Jamaicans were here giving me their support, it meant a lot," Bolt said. "I just wanted to give them what they wanted."

After his victory, Bolt posed with the Jamaican flag at the side of the clock displaying the 9.72 seconds record time. He then proceeded to accept congratulations from Gay and acknowledge the thunderous support he received from the Jamaicans in the crowd. "I always perform well in front of the Jamaican fans. They're so loud," he said.
