FIFA has stated in a report on it's website that CONCACAF President and FIFA VP Jack Warner is "currently campaigning to become the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago". Warner is in South Africa on both FIFA and UNC Alliance business, with UNC-A co-leader Basdeo Panday in tow.
Warner announced in Trinidad that he and Panday would be visiting South Africa for a one day, whirlwind, inspirational visit to see Nelson Mandela, the conqueror of apartheid in South Africa. No mention was made on the campaign trail that the trip also included FIFA business.
For all intents and purposes, FIFA's report appears to portray the trip as primarily FIFA business, with a "courtesy call" being made to Mandela. Very little was reported on the visit to the 89 year old Mandela. Panday remarked the opportunity to meet the former head of South Africa as "inspirational". The meeting took place at Nelson Mandela Foundation's Johannesburg offices.
The Trinidad and Tobago delegation also visited "the famous Soweto township and went to Vilakazi Street, which was home to South Africa's Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu before returning home after their one-day trip."
