Commentary: Let us not be too hypocritical with Akon

In spite of the recent events involving American RnB superstar Akon, and a 15 year old girl (Deena/Danah Alleyne) performing a lewd sexual act on stage at Trinidad’s Club Zen last week, one has to wonder why Akon is the one to be blamed.

I acknowledge that he was getting busy dry humping a 15 year old on stage, however last I checked it’s not Akon’s responsibility to card people coming into Zen.

I always thought it was the club’s responsibility, in this case Zen, for enforcing age restrictions prior to entering the club, right? Secondly if where going to blame Akon for his stage act, why don’t we just ban Carnival all together! C’mon Trinidad we are a country that is extremely liberal when it comes to "slackness". However, once Carnival is done, we suddenly become little angels?

For one lewd Akon act, I could literally spend a day documenting all the lewd acts that I witnessed at Carnival. And lastly as former Basketball great Charles Barkley summed it up best in a Nike commercial aired a few years ago saying "I am not a role model! Parents should be role models!"

I could not agree with Sir Charles more. Part of being a parent is taking responsibility for your children’s actions. I could care less if Ms Alleyne’s father is a pastor. The bottom line is his child messed up, and so did Club Zen, they both need to take responsibility for their actions.

Decency? Are we being hypocritical - Carnival vs Akon
