An investigation has been launched into why Deena Alleyne, 15, was allowed entry into the Zen nightclub when the age limit is 18 years and over. Deena was involved in the incident with Akon recently.
By Kristy RamnarineDeputy Commissioner of Police Winston Cooper said yesterday that he is in charge of the investigation.
"I don't know what the scenario was, whether we had our officers there. I don't know. We are looking at the evidence we have," he said.
Cooper said the investigation would not really focus on Senegalese superstar Akon but on the other parties involved.
"I don't think it had much to do with him (Akon). He didn't come and do anything, did he?" Cooper asked.
"I haven't seen anything that he did so I don't see if he is much the offense as other people might be. The law is very clear on minors."
Cooper then went on to make the distinction between a minor and a child.
"A minor is between 16 and 18 years and a child is under 16,"Cooper added.
"We (are) referring to the girl (Deena) as a minor but she is a child and should be treated as a child."
Cooper said the Liquor and Children's Law should be taken very seriously. He added that Chapter 84:01, Section 60 of the Liquor License Act states: "Every person who knowingly sells or allows any other person to sell any description of intoxicating liquors to any child apparently underage of 16 years whether for his own use or not, shall incur a penalty".
And that Chapter 24, Section 46:01 of the Children's Act states:
"If any person sells to a person apparently under age of 16 years any cigarette or cigarette papers whether for his own use or not he is liable on summary conviction."
Johnny Soong, owner of the Zen nightclub, who is in not in the country, could not be reached for comment yesterday but he did say in a recent interview with the Express that the club has an 18 years and over age limit but Danah somehow slipped through.
