Thieves have again struck at the Gordon Street, Port of Spain, band room of soca star Machel Montano.
By Denyse RenneHowever, instead of making off with the countless CDs and electronic equipment stored there, this time around, the culprits escaped with $2,500 worth of liquor.
According to Montano's administrative assistant, Simone Bacchus, "this is the third time we have been robbed and it happens after the Carnival season".
Bacchus said she last entered the building on Tuesday afternoon to supervise the installation of new locks. When she returned to office yesterday, she discovered the place ransacked and items missing.
In the past, thieves had gained entry into the building through the ceiling, Bacchus said. This time, "the thieves broke down the door", she said.
She said tickets for Montano's concerts are no longer sold at the office because of the past robberies.
"The only excuse I could think of that people would rob us is to get money. But we do not keep money in the office," she said.
Also speaking with the Express yesterday was Elizabeth Montano, Machel's mother and manager, who said she was not surprised by the latest robbery.
"This always happens after Carnival, but we will have to increase our security measures," Montano said.
Saying the thieves seemed to have been looking for something "specific and valuable, she added, "It is only material things that were stolen, they can be replaced. I am just hurt that this has happened to us, since we invest in people."
Belmont police are continuing investigations.
