Reggae: Beenie Man calling names once again

In an interview published in the latest issue of Riddim Magazine, Beenie bashes Baby Cham, Elephant Man, Dave Kelly and of course Bounty Killer.

By Kavelle Anglin-Christie and Teino Evans

He also addressed a number of controversial issues surrounding him, his music and relationship with other artistes.

The magazine at first criticises Beenie's latest Virgin effort, Undisputed saying it is "not as brilliant as Many Moods Of Moses (VP Records)", then they delved into the first and most obvious issue: 'Why was We Set The Trend/Trendsetter not a part of his new album?'

In addressing this question, Beenie said, "Dave Kelly and Baby Cham were a little bit scared about the song, so they sent lawyers up on us - they're cowards."

Ghetto fairy-tale

Beenie also spoke of Cham, saying everything he sang about in Ghetto Story was untrue.

Cham, now on tour in Japan was unable to comment on the interview. However in a previous interview with THE STAR he addressed Beenie Man's Trends and its similarity to Ghetto Story. It was published in the Wednesday, July 12 edition of the paper.

It quotes Cham as saying: "Him rip off the beat, the melody, the idea, the topic, but at the same time, I know that's him, that's just Moses."
Beenie Man - bashing again
Cham also said Beenie Man's decision to "rip off the song" showed laziness on his part.

"I wouldn't say it's lack of creativity, it's just laziness to me, because it's just easier to ride off someone else's back than to come up with something else," he said.

Cham also said in the article that he has not heard Beenie Man say that Ghetto Story was the inspiration for the song, nor does he expect to hear it.

"Not that I've heard of or looking forward to that either. At the end of the day, you don't need that (thanks)," he said in the article.

Well, one cannot imagine a Beenie interview without him commenting on his greatest rival in music, Bounty Killer. In the interview, Beenie says, "I feel the real reason why Killer is so sad about the thing (between himself and Angel) is because he was with her for ten years and she is with me for like eight months and she's pregnant."

Ugly killer

But Beenie did not stop there, he continued: "He's (Bounty) a great artiste and he's ugly, too. He's got a rough thing about him, Jamaica like that from the Shabba Rankin' days and the King Stitt days and the Yellowman days. They like ugly people."

He also commented on Bounty Killer's sexual practices which were described as illicit.

Up to press time, Bounty Killer, who is overseas, could not be reached. His booking agency, Solid Agency had no comment on the matter.

Still, one has to wonder why Beenie is so eager to discredit his fellow musicians.

In an article published in The New York Times last month, Cham: A Clean-Cut Ambassador for Reggae, a portion referred to Beenie Man and his upcoming album Undisputed - 'an umpteenth crossover attempt' it is called.

The article says: "The album focuses on playful sex songs, and it includes the Jamaican hit Hmm Hmm ... But elsewhere Beenie Man sounds a bit flat, as if his frustrating recent years had sapped his usual wit and verve ... Maybe all that makes Cham (formerly Baby Cham) the ideal reggae star for this complicated moment. He's a clean-cut but versatile vocalist, equally capable of unleashing a barrage of threats or delivering a bouquet of lover-man promises," the article said.

But according toYellowman, this disbelief in Beenie Man from the international community, is perhaps one reason why he tries so hard to belittle his counterparts.

In the Riddim article King Yellowman is one of a few artistes whose success Beenie Man attributes to being 'ugly'.

"Dat mean him ugly to because God make the whole of we. I guess him a girl fi true since him waan go call himself pretty. Man fi ugly and woman fi pretty," Yellowman told THE STAR.

Not my type

"You see with Queenie Girl, him come een like a little girl that love attention and always inna some mini skirt and short shorts, but him cyaan get my attention. Him ah nuh my type. Me nuh innah wha him innah. Him cyaan confront me and talk to me. Him is a snake so him have to stay in his hole and talk. Mi nuh like him as a girl and a person, but at the same time me nuh hate him. That just mean say him nuh exist," he said.
