News: Deportees on murder charge in Trinidad

Two men deported for committing crimes in the United States and Canada went to court in San Fernando yesterday charged with last month's murder of Securicor security guard Manmohan Ramdhan.

Jerome Barker, 47, and Jimmy Cherry, 40, are accused of shooting Ramdhan in the neck during a robbery outside Len Hap's Supermarket at Duncan Village, San Fernando on June 28.

Ramdhan died within minutes and five bags containing money from several business places, were taken by the gunman.

Barker is charged separately with the illegal possession of two 9-mm handguns and a total of 50 rounds of ammunition.

Barker and Cherry, who were charged by Homicide officer Peter Ramdeen, appeared in the San Fernando First Court before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington Barker is represented by attorney Subhas Panday.

Guns and ammunition were shown to the magistrate who ordered that they be sent to the Forensic Sciences Centre for analysis.

The case was adjourned to July 28.

Barker, deported from the United States four years ago, was arrested at one of his addresses at Dottin Street, San Fernando last Friday.

He was allegedly caught with the guns, 44 rounds of 9-mm bullets, three .38 bullets and three 12-gauge cartridges.

Police raided a house at Chandanagore Village, Central Trinidad, and arrested Cherry, who was deported from Canada three years ago.
