Jamaican performer Beenie Man, his Ruff Cut Band and Silver Cat, did not disappoint Tobagonians, as he treated them to one-and-a-half hours of dancehall selections on Saturday night.
By Elizabeth W AllardA tired-looking Beenie Man almost found himself in the arms of the police for the use of obscenities, halfway through his performance.
As police were about to move in, he quickly apologised and the men in uniform backed down.
He then said he would not allow himself to be locked up by Trinidad and Tobago police, and apologised again.
In the meantime, his fans at the Dwight Yorke Stadium car park cheered on and imitated his every move and song.
The car park was transformed as screaming fans begged for more from the time the show got underway.
Beenie man came on stage at about 1.30 a.m. yesterday and the dancehall singer thrilled his fans until 3 a.m.
As he left the stage, patrons begged him to stay but by this time, he looked even more exhausted and was escorted off the stage by police.
Speaking with Beenie Man after his performance he said that he would return to Tobago and with this first visit to the island, he felt the true spirit and passion of the Tobago people.
The atmosphere was beautiful, he said.
Joint police and army patrols were spread throughout the crowd, while people at the gates were checked with metal detectors.
Their caps were taken off and their bags were checked as well.
The event was said to have been incident free, except for one person's vehicle windscreen being smashed.
