"I don't go back on nothing I ever said, I stand by all of it," West told a gathering of local media at TSTT, West Mall yesterday.

American rapper Kanye West has no regrets about openly criticising US President George W Bush.

West accused the American president of neglecting the poor black victims of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in August, with his now famous quote "George Bush does not care about black people" during a live NBC broadcast on September 2.

He said despite his best efforts, through financial donations and otherwise, to assist the victims of the hurricane all the focus remains on the negative.

"I guess they think I announce it [the positive] enough so they are like, let him do his thing,'' he joked.

The multi-platinum album seller also sought to dispel statements about having a cocky persona. He said what the US media mistook for overconfidence and cockiness is really a self-defence mechanism.

"They think they are smarter than us [rappers] and when I say I'd do something and set big goals they say I'm cocky," he said.

"When I said I'd do a better album than Stevie Wonder they all looked at me but I always end up overachieving and all the stuff I told them I'd do I did."

West, nominated for eight Grammy awards next year, said his achievements haven't come easily as he has worked hard to bring his predictions to reality and should be allowed to enjoy the benefits.

He said, however, he didn't expect to win in all categories and picked John Legend, who is also up eight awards, to walk away with more awards on the night.

West stepped into the store just after 1 p.m., one hour and a half later than is scheduled 11.30 a.m. appearance, sporting a white T-shirt, jeans and a boots with a sweater tied around his waist.

His manager and bodyguard walked ahead of him saying no pictures were to be taken, much to surprise of the small gathering of newspaper photographers and television cameramen.

He was hurriedly directed into the back office of the store. His manager returned moments later and said West was "fixing his hair and beard" and would be out shortly.

A clean cut West appeared a few minutes later wearing what looked like a cricket sweater.

"It's a good thing in here is so cold,I don't know if it's a cricket sweater but I know it's Louis Vuitton," the rapper, who is still awaiting the arrival of his suitcases, joked when asked about it.

He said he was working on a few soon to be released tracks that featured Caribbean acts and hinted Jamaican dancehall artiste Wayne Wonder was in on the project.

West was schedule to perform at a concert at the Jean Pierre Complex last night.
